those who run with their LO

On my way to work today I drove past a woman out for a run with her baby in a stroller, only it wasn't a jogging stroller.  It was the uppababy or city select style with the pram on.  I thought that the pram was used mainly for newborns, and that 5-6months old was as young as you could run with the baby.... Also, even at 6months, wouldn't it be bad to run with the baby in the pram position ?  Yikes.  I am suprised/confused. I know I am not the baby police and everyone is entitled to do what they wish, but help me understand what is commonly accepted as safe.  How young can the baby go for a run ?  Should this be limited to only jogging strollers or are there some good non-jogging strollers that can be used for jogging on a flat surface ?

Re: those who run with their LO

  • I bought a good jogging stroller for DS's safety and my comfort.  I started running at 5w pp with him in his car seat in the BOB.  I kept him in his car seat until he was 8 or 9 months old.  He just seemed happier in there and more comfortable when he fell asleep.

I also only run on paved bike paths because the trails seem to bounce him around too much (I'm probably just being paranoid).  And we only jog together on paths that are off the street.  I do NOT trust drivers!!  I've almost been hit several times and DH's actually ended up on someone's hood.  So DS and I stay away from roads and intersections as much as possible.

All the time I see runners without proper safety gear (eg no reflectors or lights - or even light colored clothing! - at night) and running in the wrong direction with traffic.   Bikers who don't use hand signals, treat stop lights as suggestions, ride without helmets, ect.  I'm always tempted to stop them and tell them what dumbasses they're being, but oh well.

  • I got the go ahead to jog with LO at 4m because she had great neck control.  But before that I would power walk w/ jogging intervals on pavement only when she was in the carseat attached to the Graco stroller.  She was asleep, didn't bounce around and I got some good cardio in.

  • I've been jogging with LO in the carseat attached to the jogging stroller.  It was no difference (in terms of jiggling and bouncing) than a car ride.  We started running at 8 weeks pp.  I would've started even earlier had he been born "normal."

  • Yeah I think that's bad. My jogging stroller specifically says not to run with the baby (or kid) in the reclined position. And that's in a jogger... carseat attachment I could see, after all you're going slower with probably less bouncing than a ride in the car... but a pram? not so much. I hope the baby doesn't get hurt!!
  • I started jogging with infant carseat adaptor on my BOB when LO was 9 weeks old just a couple weeks ago. I follow the same safety guidelines the pp described. The carseat feels more secure in my BOB than the travel system. I know it is not recommended but has worked really well, feels very secure and he loves it so much.

It is awesome for moms to have this freedom to get out and exercise.

    This exactly for us.

  • I have a fabulous jogging stroller (the Chariot-Cougar 1) & it has an infant insert that is like a hammock with great neck support. I started jogging at 5wks postpartum & he loves it. I stick to paved roads in quiet neighbourhoods & probably jog as fast as I can powerwalk so I don't think the bouncing is really any different at all. It feels fabulous to get out for a jog w. my son & dogs & the fresh air has helped him start sleeping better & identify day & night better.
