Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Probably a stupid question about kids who drink milk...

....but....

If you try to adhere to USDA guidelines and give your child milk throughout the day (either with meals or random snack times), how do you do it when you are on the road or on the go?  Do you just keep a "bottle bag" or Thermos full of milk?

We're looking to transition our son to milk soon, but we're wondering how we'll do it when we're away from home but don't have access to a place selling whole milk. Is there something that makes more sense than a bottle bag? (He is still not great with cups.)

Thank you!

  • If we are going somewhere that doesn't have milk available, which is rare honestl, we just pop into a convience store and buy a small container.

  • Buy a small container on the road (at a convenience store), give yogurt instead.....

Two servings of milk and milk products is what I was told was recommended.   Yogurt, cheese, etc. counts.

  • He drinks whole milk at home.  I have juice boxes of 2% milk that I use when I am out.  They don't have to be refrigerated, and 2% is preferable to no milk.  The company that makes them is called "Lil Milk".

  • Usually when we are out and about I don't bring milk.  In a day she only needs about 16 ounces and she drinks 2 full sippys a day.  When she first started drinking milk she did want it more often so I would bring a small amount with us if we would be out for longer.  I put it in an insulated bag with a small ice pack.  If we were to be on the road traveling for a long period of time I would probably have a small cooler or something for milk and other snacks for the kids.
  • I bring extra milk in the thermos. I find its easier to have it with, than to worry about buying it somewhere when we are on the go.

  • If I am going to a restaurant or I am out on the go I just do not bring milk.  I put water in his sippy. It really is not a big deal to go without milk for a meal. or even for a day.  I worried about this with my first so I know where you are coming from. Now I am much more relaxed about this sort of thing.   When I travel to a relative's house I buy milk when I arrive.  If whole milk is not available I just buy whatever is in stock.  A few days without whole milk is not harmful.

  • I wish it were that easy!  He is a milk ADDICT!  LOL. It's ridiculous.

HA! My DD was and still is a milk addict. We bought a thermos from Gander Moutain (similar to Cabela's). It fits nicely into the bottle holder in my diaper bag and keeps the milk cold for up to 24 hous. (We don't let it sit that long, though!)

  • Bring a thermos, buy it on the go, switch him to water except at meals. I'm sorry, I'm going to be snarky...this is not that hard to figure out. We all managed to figure it out withou asking for help. Perhaps I'm just tired of seeing this question 100 times a week...nothing personal, I am sure you are lovely :)
  • You really can't worry about milk that much.  If you're eating on the go, bring water instead.  No big deal to go without milk for a meal here and there (or every day IMO).

Sorry if you have seen this question a hundred times a week; I don't frequent these boards or this site anymore. And, yes, I can figure it out -- I was looking for the best solution, however, which may or may not be the one(s) that I have come up with.

It just amazed me, sometimes, how mothers who don't frequent these boards figure things out. I mean, it's milk. Put it in a cup. Leave the house. See? Problem solved. I just don't understand what deeper answer you're looking for or expecting. And when you got perfectly acceptable and reasonable (and.not bitchy answers, like mine was), you said it wasn't that easy b/c he loves his milk. It really IS that easy, though. It's milk. Bring, buy it, or skip it. It is really just that easy. So, ok, I'm picking on you, but it's not YOU, per se. Just the question. As I said, I'm sure you're lovely :)
  • I think your question is fine. Ask whatever you want -- it's obviously not too boring a question since you got so many replies :-). If I don't feel like answering something, I just don't open it! Anyway, as for the milk question -- I bought an insulated sippy at BRU. Yesterday DD had milk in it for 4 hours and it was still cold. I also buy the milk juice boxes. There are two brands of organic -- Organic Valley and Horizon. Neither has to be refrigerated. They're low fat, not whole, but they're fine for occasional use.

  • I put her milk in an insulated sippy cup and my diaper bag (jujube) has insulated pockets that fit sippy cups...so I put it in there as well.

  • i have never brought milk with me when i leave the house. they have 2 sippies a day (8oz each)...one when they wake up from their nap (sometimes i make this a smoothie) and one before bed.

i think all moms are worried about milk in the beginning because we are so used to needing to nurse/bring formula with us around the clock.  but you will see that milk is less of a deal...16oz a day (the recommended amount) is not very much.  and, if they have other diary products, even less is appropriate.

  • I use Horizon milk boxes that I buy in the case. I don't care that they aren't whole milk.  He has had whole milk 85% of the time since he turned 1. A LOT of it. So, the other 15% when we've been on the go has not been a concern.  It's called "lowfat" but I'm not sure it actually says the percentage (1 or 2%).
  • I also keep the single-serve/non-refrigerated Horizon organic 2% containers on hand in case we're going to be gone for awhile or going somewhere I know won't have organic milk.  Starbucks always does, though!  :)
  • Just to put it in perspective: DD doesn't drink milk.  At all.  She doesn't like it, never liked it, couldn't be convinced to like it.   She loves yogurt and cheese.   Whatever you figure out that works for you will be fine.
  • Hmm, I'm not sure why people think this is a silly question.  I never post on these boards, was just snooping for Christmas card inspiration photos.  My kids are HUGE milk drinkers, and rarely get anything else.  Two options we do.  We always start with full sippies for each of them, and then use our 8 oz bottles with lids to fill and put in a cooler.  Depending on the length of the trip, we either fill our little one we used to carry bottles in, or the bigger cooler, both packed with ice.  On summer trip, we did pack a full gallon of milk in our cooler so we had it on the way and for the first night there.

The other thing we do, is if we are just going to eat or something, we do get them watered down juice.  We don't give it to them at home, so it's a special treat.

  • Ds drinks soy milk, so I can't  find a small container of it when we're out and about.  I usually just give him juice or water, and leave the milk to the morning and night sippy.  I have noticed that the less milk he gets throughout the day, the better he eats at mealtime.  He does stay hydrated, but he also grown to love cheese, so atleast he's getting some dairy.  We're working on getting him to eat some yogurt.   Now, if we're gone all day, then I do pack a cooler with his milk, and we take it with us.

  • We actually only give milk twice a day.  Is there a reason you have to give it during the day...I thought just the total amount mattered.

We usually just take water with us when we go places.  If he's going to eat a meal I will give him yogurt (gerber kind that isn't refridgerated).
