Fly when they usually nap and bring snacks lol. I just flew with DS last Thursday and I read him books and we played Wheels on the Bus on my iphone and did things like that. He had his own seat so it was easier for me to keep whipping things out.
I haven't flown with DS yet, but I got a gift for a 1 year old who will be flying.
You know those mats that you put water in the pen and they "color" with water? I got a travel size one that folds up into a "briefcase" at Wal Mart. Could try that.
Snacks, book, portable DVD player if you aren't flying on an airline that has seatback TVs. Never underestimate how much fun walking up and down the aisles can be. Window seat if possible for take off and landing. And ditto nap time.
we are flying this wed and I'm losing sleep over it. I just stocked up on snacks, a leash, magnadoodle, and crayola special markers that color on special paper.
Mine usually sleeps during most flights. But when he's awake, he likes snacks and small toys and books(rotate them) and he loves looking at everyone else on the plane...mine also likes the safety guide (pictures of ppl) and the mags they leave for you on the plane.

One word: Magnadoodle!
Our son played with this nearly the entire 5 hour trip we went on. It is a godsend!
(They sell travel size ones too)
