sorry to be a total PW but our house is breaking down

Andrew got his ears checked today - he finished his last dose of augmentin today for a sinus infection, and that's his 4th round of abx (1 other augmentin, 2 omnicef) and now he has a double ear infection he did not have when he started augmentin 10 days ago.

OMG.  Seriously.

He drank 2 oz all day. Napped 20 min.  Fell asleep in the car tonight and normally will transfer no problem, but since sick, woke up screaming.  Barely eating. It's just a disaster.

Now he's on dualing antibiotics (jen do you know what they are called??) one is Clindomycin and Cleftin I think (?).  We had trouble finding it but got it at Target and was able to get 2 doses in today, but he threw one up b/c it tastes so bad and he has to get 10 mL of it.  Sigh.

Please pray we can get into the ENT this week.  PLEASE.  We need this.

  • I'm so sorry Kathy!!  Praying you can get into the ENT this week!!!!

Don't think I'm crazy.... our pharmacy sends up a little container of chocolate syrup with the clinda.  It tastes like straight up garbage (not exaggerating) and mixing it with the chocolate really helps.  I also pull it up in a syringe with orange juice sometimes too.

  • Goodness, Kathy! I am so sorry. I hope y'all get into the ENT asap. ((hugs))

My friend mentioned that, How much do you use?  My only worry is he gets so much of it (10 mL, plus then we have to get 5 Ml of the other antibitoic down him) and he's really resisting. I'm worried to add any  more volume, even if it's tasty, because he wants nothing to do with medicine, milk, or food most of the time.

I usually add anywhere from 2-5 mLs.  The extra volume does suck, and sometimes it isn't worth the fight.  Does he have to take them at the same time (15mL total) or are they at different times?  It is such a tricky situation!  If  you spread them out, he's going to be pissed all the time, but if you do it all at once the volume is huge.  I just want you guys to get some answers and get little A better!!

2mL isn't too bad, maybe I"ll try that..

well I don't know.  She said we can give them together but I don't think we have to give them together. It's hard b/c here is the list of meds he got today. You can see why he's uber pissed about it:

1 dose of augmentin (all done now)

    2 doses of prilosec

    3 doses of eryped

    2 doses of motrin

2 doses of cleftin (will be 3 per day)

2 doses of clindomycin (will be 3 per day)

That's a *** ton of doses. I'm also hesitant to give the prilosec (3 mL) with others as I don't want him throwing that up too, and I feel like all of this is going to hurt his stomach!

I'll try the chocolate, and then maybe experiment with a little spacing. That way he can at least absorb some if he pukes again.

    Thanks!!!!

  • (((HUGS)))  I will pray that the ENT has a break and can get you in this week.
  • Lots of hugs! I hope you are able to get in the ENT this week.
  • Poor guy! (and poor mommy/daddy too!)

I wonder if they make any of that in chewable form? A is old enough to chew them now - or at least you could break them into pieces he could chew. (James hates the liquid meds that are "good" flavored even. Chewables go down no problem - just dosing can get tricky)

I really hope you guys catch a break soon!

  • Sad

I'm sorry you guys are going through all of this.  Again.  Do you think you are going to try to get in with another doctor like you talked about yesterday?  Surely if you tell them the situation they'll have some pity.  Ugh.

We are going to see anyone we can as soon as we can.

I called last week and explained to the NP.  My son is really sick.  He has had a sinus infection for 6 weeks.  He's been on omnicef, augmentin, he won't eat. Nothing helps.

She said there is not a single appointment but to keep trying.  So, we're going to keep trying.

    FAIL!

    It's nice having smart friends!

  • You guys just can't catch a break! I'm thinking about you guys. Can you call another ENT? Can you call on Monday and BEG them? Poor kiddo. Poor mommy.

    That's the plan :/

  • I'm sorry, that sucks majorly.  I hope something works and you guys get into the ENT ASAP.

  • I find that to absolutely ridic they can't get you in considering your situation.  I think I would just go camp out in the office on Monday.

Maybe ask Jen or the Pedi, but I am wondering if the Clinda is going to be esp likely to cause rash issues.  Clindamycin is definitely not one of my favorites.

She said that too :( He has never had rash so I'm a little nervous but we'll see.  I have some probiotics and yogurt I can sometimes get him to eat.

I'm going to call and tell them now that he's on these new meds and we need to be seen.  it's just out of control at this point

  • Ugh, Kathy.  I'm so sorry for you, and especially for little A.

Did your pedi not mention antibiotic shots?  I know they hurt a lot (more than vaccinations), but a lot of times they're more effective.  Since it sounds like you might have trouble getting all those doses of meds in him, it might be easiest that way.

I dunno :/  Things got bad later fri night so we did not see his regular pedi.  He has had the shots before.  I mentioned them but she wanted to go this route but unfort I cannot explain why.

  • I was wondering about injections, too, since he's not clearing up, and he's on so many oral meds already. :(
