2nd Trimester

Need Input from "further-alongs" - scared!

I thought maybe posting this under 2nd trimester might be better because you folks are further along and have experienced a little more with pregnancy!
So, this afternoon (about 2 hrs ago) when I went to the bathroom, I dripped red blood into the toilet and also saw it when I wiped!  (sorry for the tmi).  I'm wearing a liner now - and there's nothing on it at all.  I've been spotting off and on for the last 5 days, but it's been very light and brown.  I also had my first u/s yesterday and was told that the fetal pole and sac were both there and looked normal.
I'm so scared.  I spoke with my doc's nurse on call and she said there's really no reason to go to the ER if I'm not in any kind of pain.  I have a lot of bloating, but I've had that for two weeks due to trapped air/gas and constipation from my prenatals.

Anyone else have this happen!!  I guess I just won't sleep until I can get in with the doc on Monday.  I just hate not knowing.  It's really wearing on me!

  • Lots of people spot during pregnancy but if you're worried go to the ER.

  • If youre worried go to the ER. Spottings pretty normal during pregnancy though, especially early pregnancy! It could be old blood or something couldve jarred your cervix, any number of things. Good luck to you! <3

  • When I was about 6 weeks I went to the bathroom at KFC with hubby and ran out crying bc i was bleeding. A lot! We went to the hospital and they took my HCG level and I came back 2 days later (after having less bleeding tho some was still there) and they took my HCG level again. All turned out ok! Sometimes your body just does that. The fact that you said your blood was not soaking a pad, and that it was brownish is a very very good sign. Just relax and rest as much as you can. Sleep early and long, and take extra care. If your Dr told you your uterus and the baby looked ok, then dont worry. (Hard to do I know.) Just relax... stress isnt good for the baby so calming yourself is the best. My prayers are with you! Good luck hun!

  • were you taking a crap?  it could be the roids!

if you are sure that that's not the case, then you may find peace in going to the ER instead of waiting until monday.  but it is quite normal to spot in pg.  if the red continues, i personally suggest going to the ER to see what's up.

    good luck!

  • could be a million things, it is good they saw something on the ultrasound though.  Many people spot and it ends up being nothing.  You are right though there is not much more you can do but put your feet up and try to relax (easier said than done).  If you start bleeding more or get bad cramping I would go to the ER.

  • I've been there.  I had some brown spotting around 6 weeks.  That wasn't too worrisome but then at 8 weeks, the night before my first appointment, I had red blood, enough to ruin my underwear.  I went to my appointment the next morning totally fearing the worst but it turned out everything was fine.  My doctor said it was unexplained bleeding and everything has been fine since then, thank goodness!  I think it's good that you've already been to the doctor and everything looked normal.  I say try your best to relax and have the doctor check it out on Monday.

  • Thanks everyone for the helpful input!  It makes me feel a little better.  I think the fact that today it was RED and not the light, light brown I've been seeing off and on, just completely freaked me out!!!

I really appreciate everyone sharing experiences.  It REALLY is helpful!

  • Did you have a transvaginal u/s or did they give you a pap at your appointment? I had a pap done at my first appointment and was spotting the next day. My OB told me it was probably going to happen.

I also had two days straight of spotting right around 6 weeks and they had me come in for an u/s and everything looked great. If it's not enough to fill a pad and you don't have pain, you are probably fine, but if you want the peace of mind, go to the ER.

  • I had brown spotting around 6 weeks and around 8 weeks I had significant amount of bright red bleeding. Turns out I had a "subchorionic hemmorhage." It was basically a pocket of fluid in my uterus. The blood was that fluid leaving.

I know it's impossible, but I recommend just trying to calm down. The stress you're feeling right now is probably worse for your baby-to-be then releasing a little blood.

    I had a vaginal u/s yesterday morning w/no pap.

The more posts like this that I'm reading, the more relaxed I'm becoming.  Thanks so much.

  • I had a little brown spotting at 13 wks... I was so scared that I went straight to the ER.  Everything was fine.  If you can't wait until Monday then I would go to the ER for peace of mind.  I'm glad that I did.
  • I've had lots of first trimester spotting & bleeding with both pregnancies. I've noticed that a lot of the time I would get some red or pink bleeding after bowel movements- sometimes if you strain while going it can irritate your cervix. The good news is that your bleeding has stopped- just keep an eye out and call your doc if you get any cramps. For now, I would just lay down and drink some water. GL!

This was going to by my question.  If they did, it is fairly normal to notice a little blood.  Just relax between today and tomorrow, if you notice any cramping or if the bleeding gets heavier then go to the doctor/ER.

  • You can go to the ER if you're really worried.

I spotted (and cramped) when I was pregnant with the twins and now they're 8 months old!

  • You actually should post this on the 1st tri board because I spotted at 6 or 7 weeks, got an early u/s, and then realized it's really common (from seeing other posts on the 1st tri board). My MW told me it's from implantation. I know, you read that implantation happens in the first days, but this is when the baby burrows further into you and sometimes you'll have bleeding.

If you had a u/s yesterday, you are probably fine. Try to stop worrying. I know, easier said than done.

  • Thanks again everyone.  I appreciate all the input.

Well - like a paranoid 1st-time preg woman - I ended up going to the ER last night because I was stressing out more by not knowing anything.  I really  wish I wouldn't have gone.  They did a vag u/s and get this....couldn't find anything! However, the doc didn't think this was b'cuz of a m/s.  She said she really thinks that my bleeding would've been heavier and include clots or tissue.  Also, my cervix is very tilted and I know the u/s tech at my doctor's office on Friday had to really "search" to find LO.  So, I'm just hoping and praying that the tech at the ER just wasn't able to get the right angle!? ugh.  My HGH level last night was 2500, but we have no baseline to compare it to - so no clue if that's good.  Should've just sucked it up and waited until Monday :(

I wouldn't beat myself up over this decision if I were you. You wanted an answer and instead of worrying about it all weekend, you got it. Of course, the bill for the visit will suck Wink but it's better knowing there is nothing wrong instead of having it on your mind for days.

Yeah, but that's just it - I DIDN'T get an answer.  Now I'm just more worried since they couldn't see anything on the u/s at the ER! ugh.

  • I had this exact thing happen to me throughout my whole first trimester. ( I am now 22 weeks and carrying a healthy, squiggly baby boy!)  I guess I was just a "bleeder" sorry if this is TMI! The best thing I did was lay down and relax.  Put your feet up, watch a movie, try not to think bad/scary thoughts! (I know it is hard).  T & P coming your way!
  • Update....got in with my doc first thing this morning.  They did another vag u/s and immediately saw the little nugget and a good heartbeat!  They were actually shocked that the ER wasn't able to find anything & suggested in the future if I need to go to the ER - to pick a different facility!  I then had a pelvic exam (I actually had red bleeding again this morning).  The doc wasn't able to find any "active bleeding", but found lots of old/brown blood.  She said she's calling all of this a "threatened miscarriage" and I'm now on pretty much the next step up from bed rest.  Just can't do a lot and have to be very careful.  I go back next Monday for another u/s and check.  They're unable to explain the bleeding at this point.  They also put my mind at ease and told me that going to the ER was totally fine and the u/s tech and nurse said they would've gone themselves if in my shoes even if it wasn't their first pregnancy!
