CA-MRSA bug... WTF!!

Adrian has had 4 abscesses around his diaper area since he was 6 months old. The first one was treated with oral and topical antibiotics and it went away. Then he got 2 more this summer and finally, another big one last week. I took him to the pedi and she said since they are recurring, he might have acquired the Community-Acquired MRSA bacteria. It seems that only people in hospitals or with weak immune systems got it, but now it's out there in the community. Pedi says she saw 3 cases of it the day I took Adrian. The bad part of it is it's not your regular bug, it's a penicillin-resistant bacteria that's hard to get rid of. He's on non-penicillin oral antibiotics and ointment, but I'm so pissed.

I had a couple of them this summer too and I never had them my whole life! My guess is Adrian got it when he was going to my parents house. My loser brother (the one who's a bum, doesn't want to work and live off my parents) hangs out with the scum of the earth and he's had some weird skin infections... you can bet your arse Adrian probably got that bacteria from him. My brother has poor hygiene and touches everything in that house. I'm so pissed off right now. And the kicker is that we're going there again for Christmas and we have to stay in his old room! I'm going to go nuts disinfecting EVERYTHING, my parents are going to think I'm nuts.

For now I have to give Adrian and myself bleach baths to help erradicate the bug (1/3 Clorox diluted in a full bathtub of water).

My brother is disgusting and he probably gave this thing to my poor baby. I told my mother and of course, since she always defends and enables him, she doesn't think it's a big deal and is in denial. But get this... she called me today and says she has a red bump on her forehead!!! Poetic justice. Keep enabling that slob and that's what you get.

*Sigh* I'm not sure how I'm going to survive 12 days in that house. My parents I can deal with but if my brother is around I'm going to shoot myself Angry

  • WTH??  You do NOT have to stay in that sloth's room.  There are always options.  Get a cheap hotel.  Stay at an old friend's house.  Don't go!  :)

  • Poor Adrian!  I hope the absesses aren't too painful and that the antibiotic clears them up quickly! What is it with Texas and MRSA?  My sister in law in Dallas just picked up MRSA (but she was in the hospital).  I'm with BB, no way would I stay there and subject my kid to a sibling like that!

  • MRSA has been around for quite sometime now.  It is really prevalent in convalescent homes, preschools & elementary schools.

MRSA = methicillin resistance staphylococcus areus

My lil' sis who is a slob herself had it and had to have surgery to have the lesions removed. She can not transmit it to anyone unless she has broken skin and has not washed her hands.

Sorry your baby got it.  Like the other posters I would not stay in there. That being said, anything he has touched, tables, counters, door knobs, sofas, remote controls, light switches.  basically everything in the house could have the germs on it.  Your best bet is to ask everyone who is going to hold Adrian to wash their hands in hot soapy water for 30 seconds, as well as their wrists and arms, prior to holding him.

Here is a link to the CDC info on MRSA, scroll down, it tells you what needs to be disinfected.  https://www.cdc.gov/mrsa/environment/index.html

    Hope this helps you!

  • Hmmm, your pedi has multiple cases in his practice?  Granted you're in a large city, but I have to admit that would make me wonder.  And given CA-MRSA's prevalence in most communities, it really could have come from anywhere - the library, the carts at the grocery, etc.  So while your brother my be a slob, he may not be the culprit.  I do agree with the pp - if you don't want to stay in the house, don't.
  • I feel so bad for both of you!! (((HUGS)))
  • WOW - that's terrible!!! ((HUGS!!!!)))

I agree with this - it could have come from anyone and anywhere and I completely agree with getting a hotel room. 12 days is a looooong time to visit if things aren't physically or emotionally comfortable and esp. when it's neither!!! If I were going into a situation that I was that uncomfortable with I would be a nervous wreck and I know I would just make matters worse - staying on everyone to wash up and keeping an eagle eye on the baby and running clorox washcloths over everything. Somebody would be dumping a body somewhere, not sure who though, - just sayin'.

  • I ditto the hotel room, bug aside, I think my nerves would be rattled spending more than 1 day there.  All I can say is hang in there and good luck!  {{{HUGS}}}

  • Oh, MAN!

Hotel room, this is a time to splurge, I think.  Maybe you can give a choice...  Maid service cleanup of the entire house, your choice of service and intensity, or hotel room and lots of activities outside the house.

I am sorry your mom got it on top of you guys, but it sounds like she needed to in order to get her to understand a little.  BLEAH!

  • Oh no! Poor Adrian!
  • I really can't stay in a hotel, can't afford it and my parents would be deeply hurt. The only thing we could do is sleep in the office and not in my bro's room. Which might be the case anyway if he doesn't want to give up his room (he's supposed to go to my other brother's apt). Who knows, all I know is that I'm taking Clorox wipes, a waterproof mattress cover and my own pillow in my suitcase. And Adrian is sleeping in his pack 'n play.

  • Chances are that you probably picked it up from the pediatrician and not your brother-- CA MRSA is just about everywhere. Read up on it on line. The CA kind is the less dangerous kind but you still have to be vigilant. At this point, LO is already colonized with it and you are probably too (I think it's like 1 in 10 or something) so you will just have to be vigilant every time there is a broken skin situation with LO. Good luck. Despite all your bro's issues, it is more likely it is coming from the Ped or daycare, honestly.
