I received a letter from the nurse at my youngest DD's preschool stating that she has failed her vision test 2x and needs to see an eye dr. asap. (she has an appointment Dec 16, they are booked until then) I'm just wondering if it is just possible that she had a bad day and her eyes are fine. (I guess that is just what I'm hoping)
Re: Anyone's DC failed their vision test?
I had to take my daughter in for an eye test before Kindergarten. I went to a local place and he put her in glasses and said she had to wear them all the time. I don't wear glasses and my dh didn't start wearing them until he was in high school so I was a little skeptical and worried that her eyes would be ruined if she wore glasses all the time.
I had forgotten that we have a family friend who is an optometrist so I took her there for a second opinion. He told me that she only needed to wear the glasses for school and when she's reading.
Fast forward one year when I take her back for another appointment and he said she doesn't have to wear them at all!
He said that he's seeing a lot of little kids getting glasses and it's because of the state mandates. He also said that kids eyes are still developing and that if you intervene with glasses, you could interfere with the normal development of the eye. He said a lot of kids grow out of the deficit (whatever it is). I'm not saying this for all kids - there are some kids that definitely need glasses. But my daughter never complained about things being fuzzy and I never saw her squint when reading which is why I was skeptical.
Also, the second optometrist I went to got the same "readings" that the first one did - he just chose a different "diagnosis". I put those in quotes b/c I'm not sure of the correct terminology (like I said, I don't wear glasses).
I'm also wondering how they tested her - my daughter was still learning her letters when I took her in and is also a little shy so I think that contributed to her not "seeing" certain letters. He did have shapes too but I can't remember how she did with those.
Edits: I clarified some things in the above.
My youngest was diagnosed by his pedi at his 2 year check up and the pedi optho confirmed the diagnosis via some pretty in depth testing.
He now goes every 3 months (mainly because we're patching to try to strengthen his weaker eye).
His last visit was last Thursday and he did AWFUL. I was in a total panic that he couldn't read the eye chart with his glasses ON. They dilated his eyes again so the pedi optho could get a better look at what was going on.
After 45 minutes of freaking out it turns out he was being a toot. Apparently he just wasn't in the mood to do an eye exam that day.
It is totally possible that she's fine but if the exams were on 2 different days then it's more likely that there's a real issue going on.
But.... my advice is:
1. Find a pedi optho. I was stunned at the tools they have specifically for evaluating and treating children. Who knew a 2 yr old could do an eye exam?
2. Go. Eyes are somewhat "fixed" by age 6. If there is an issue and you get her in glasses now you will enable her brain to form connections to the eye. After the age of 6/7 these connections don't really grow. With glasses and patching Jace's vision is actually improving. Who knew?!?!?!?!
3. If she does need glassed don't sweat it. I was really upset. I cried thinking he would be teased or would never see the world the same way I get to. I was concerned he wouldn't be able to enjoy sports as much, etc.
I was upset over nothing. They're just a part of who he is. He adjusted quickly at age 2. He actually asks for them because he knows he sees better in them. I went from feeling sad that he needed them to guilty that my poor baby wasn't seeing well and I had no clue!
They've got some super fun frames for kids these days and I think he looks pretty darned cute in them!
DH and I were just commenting as we were looking thru some old photos that he doesn't look like himself without them on now.
GL!
I hope every thing is fine but in the event that it's not I just wanted you to hear that your kid needing glasses may not be any where near as bad as you (or at least I) anticipate.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
Ds failed his vision test this year. I assumed he probably wasn't paying attention but I brought him to a pediatric opthamologist just to be safe - and he was fine.
** FYI ** My insurance didn't tell me this when I called to verify that this dr was in-network. My insurance only covers 1 complete eye exam per year. So I now owe $275.00 because they denied the bill. Check with your insurance first!
thanks for the replies. I was just seeing how often the DC actually needs glasses. She failed it 2x and 2 different occasions.
We actually have been dealing with the pedicatric eye dr. ( sorry can't spell it. lol) Nathan had a retinal hemorrhage when he was 3 months old, he goes to the eye dr. every year. (his vision is great he doesn't wear glasses) I'm not worried about it. Thanks again.
