2nd Trimester

DH can hear baby's heartbeat!

Awww!! DH put his head on my stomach this morning and he could hear baby's heartbeat. He insists that it wasn't my heartbeat bc it was much faster. He's also feeling kicks now more and more. Of course, baby's kicks make me feel more pregnant, but there's something so freaking endearing about DH being able to feel baby's kicks!!! I got all teary-eyed this morning!

  • DH said the same thing this morning!  Not sure if it was indeed the baby's heart beat or my own, but I thought it was incredibly cute how he had his head on my stomach this morning listening for a few minutes.

  • Im not sure if thats possible. I mean, Im glad hes excited and i know its a wonderful feeling him being able to feel the kicks, but as far as the heartbeat goes, i dont think its possible to hear it just by putting an ear up to your belly.

  • That's truly adorable that he thought he heard the heartbeat!  Don't tell him yet that it's not possible ;)

  • I don't think that is possible. I have a stethoscope and I can't even hear baby's heartbeat with it. There is many layers of fat and muscle. Only a doppler or ultrasound waves can pick up the tiny baby's heartbeat. It was probably your heartbeat. But on the other hand, it's so adorable that he was talking to your baby like that.

Esma: I'll turn him into a flea. A harmless little flea. Then Ill put that flea in a box. And put that box inside another box. Mail that box to myself. And when it arrives. ILL SMASH IT WITH A HAMMER. Its brilliant, brilliant, brilliant I tell you. Genius I say.
Or to save on postage. Ill poison him with this.

After twenty weeks of pregnancy, some fetal heartbeats can be heard without any amplification at all. Of course, mom might have a hard time bending over to listen to her own belly, but dad can give it a try every so often.

For Dad: Hearing Baby's HeartbeatPlace your ear against her tummy and you may be able to hear your little one's heart beat. You've probably been hearing your baby's heartbeat with a Doppler at those doctor or midwife visits. But at 25 weeks pregnant you can hear that thump-thump in the comfort and privacy of your own home. If the room is very quiet, and you both are very still, you may be able to hear a very faint heartbeat when you gently press your ear against her stomach. If not, try again tomorrow. You're getting closer ? plus, this gets you closer to her, too.

That's some craziness! Too bad we can't bend over and stick our ear against our belly. Well my stethoscope will be put to better use when I hit 25 weeks.

  • i read ahead and my pregnancy week by week book gives a tip for dad that says by 20 something weeks he can hear it with just pressing his ear to her abdomen. granted, you have to be in just the right spot, but it is possible, apparently...

    congrats! thats exciting!

  • Or maybe the pulse from the placenta?

  • Even with the website you posted I do not believe that is possible. Especially since you are only 22 weeks. Even with a high tech doppler machine they have a hard time picking up my daughter's heartbeat in the hospital because she is still SO small. Probably wishful thinking!

I am happy your DH is excited though and those moments where they are belly loving are so special.

  • My OB told H to start listening for our baby with his stethoscope around this time and he can hear her if he can find the right spot.

  • Aw. Whatever it is he heard, it's cute that he was so excited about it.

My OB could barely hear my baby's HB this morning with a doppler. And I have a posterior placenta. She said it's because my stomach muscles are still so strong and tight. I have a feeling DH won't be hearing LO's HB this go 'round...maybe after having a few kids wreaks havoc on my abs, lol.

  • Cute! I think it's totally possible, especially if you're on the smaller side. My doctor could hear our baby's heart beat with the stethescope at 18w.
