Hey everyone, My hubby and I have decided that I'll be going off the pill around Feb. I'm having one hell of a time quitting smoking.... any help? I'm sure there's others out there who smoked before they got preggers, how did you quit?
Chantix! But take it now, so it's out of your system by the time you TTC. I smoked for more than 10 years (ew), and quit last Feb. I got pregnant in May, which was a surprise, albeit a nice one. But I didn't quit so I could get pregnant. The timing just worked out for me.
Chantix was truly a miracle pill for me. I am NOT a medicine person. I hate painkillers, I rarely even take advil when I get a headache. It worked like a charm. I tell people, it's not like I even "quit" smoking. It was just like, I didn't smoke anymore. it just went away. It was so easy.
Check out these websites - Become An Ex is an online quite smoking program. Smokefree.gov has a TON of good info. I have known many people who have found success this way, or with quit lines (look for your states 1-800 quit line)
Remember that it will be difficult, but it won't kill you to quit. Behavioral training is the key - you have to overcome both the "habit" of smoking as well as the "addiction". Good news: the physiological addiction, i.e. chemical brain changes, will be gone within as little as 4 weeks of NO smoking (total abstinence). If you can make it that far, you will be in the clear. The only thing you will have to battle at that point is the habit, such as automatically reaching for the smokes in your purse when you start the car... starting new habits is difficult, but not impossible if you are aware of what you are trying to accomplish.
Hi just wanted to say good luck in your efforts to quit smoking. My DH smoked for a long time and quit before LO's arrival. It is definitely difficult but will feel so good once you're done.
**side note** smoking while taking BC pills is a huge stroke risk
I smoked for almost 10 years and have been trying to quit for about 2 or 3 months. Then I saw that positive pregnancy test and I quit cold turkey. Becoming pregnant really is the best motivation for me to quit. My husband on the other hand is still smoking about 5 or 10 cigs a day but he HAS completely stopped drinking alcohol to be supportive. Just do your best and think about how much you want to get pregnant and the health of your baby.
