Make the move to the big potty or keep using little?

dd is officially potty trained. She is doing awesome. I have two little Bjorn potties (one downstairs and one up.) She goes to the potty on her own, drops her pants and panties, and says "Mommy, all done" when finished. I come and wipe and the clean the little potty. It really isn't a big deal for me. I don't mind it... and I am so proud of her for how well she's doing. She goes on the normal (albeit smaller) potties at MDO and she will also go on the big potties if we are out and about, with my help of course.

She's tiny, not quite 25#. We are traveling for Thanksgiving and I am taking her little potty seat that covers the big potty and she will use that all week. It will kind of be a pain bc I will have to help her every time. She is too small to put the seat on (well, I guess she could do that) and climb up.

So I was thinking we we returned, the Bjorn potties would "disappear" and I would have her start using the big potty with a potty seat. But I'm wondering if that is a good idea or not, bc then I will have to be available to help her get on everytime... and she's been so successful on her own.

WDYT? How did you make this transition... or how does your toddler use the big potty if you never have a little potty? A stool?

A friend rec'd this

but it's just one more thing to buy...

Finally, I believe I read that it is imp. for their feet to touch the ground (or something) to fully empty their bladder. True? Or is that a myth?

tia! (and sorry this got so long ;)

Re: Make the move to the big potty or keep using little?

  • I was happy to switch DS to the big potty, just because emptying the little one is gross, and once they can use a big toilet, they will go anywhere!  We bought two potty seats for our house (both bathrooms) and two step stools (HE LOVES the stools).  He puts the seat on by himself and using the stool he ccan climb on and off the toilet easier.  We also bought a travel potty at BRU which you can use as a little potty or a seat for the big toilet while on the road or at public bathrooms.  DS is excited to use the potty as well because he feels like a real big boy!

  • With all the talk in our house about being a "big girl" she started to associate big girl with big potty and kept asking to sit on the big one.  So after a week of this, the little one just disappeared (well, not really, I stashed it in my trunk for those emergencies when we're out).  She hasn't asked for it since.

Sometimes she puts a stool under the big potty, but most times not. I usually go in with her and put her on the toilet then she can do the rest.

  • we trained griffin on both the bjorn potty and the big potty - he still doesn't have a preference- goes between them both depending on where we are (upstairs or down... out of the house, etc)

when traveling we bring the bjorn with us - so if he has to go and we're stuck on the road not near an exit we can pull over and he can just go in it.  We also have a small travel fold up potty i keep in the car at all times- but have only needed to use it maybe 2x's in the past 8 months.

  • DD uses a potty seat on the big toilet and does it all by herself. She uses a step stool(I bought at Walmart for $8). She puts the seat on by herself, puts the stool in front of the potty, gets up there and down by herself. She also wipes herself most of the time when she pees. DD is small also...she weighs around 25#.
