So last weekend my Mom and I went out shopping to get LO some winter clothes. I went to Children's Place and spent a pretty hefty amount of money. A few days ago I went to put on some really cute overalls that my mom had bought but they were to short for my tall baby. So I set the overalls aside, and figured I would take them back. So I had to go to the mall today. So I grabbed the overall and the tag. I didn't have the receipt but figured since I was doing an exchange and had the tag (which I had taken off but kept).
So I get to TCP and tell the lady that I need to exchange the item for a bigger size since it didn't fit. She say okay I just need you ID. So I take the overalls and tag out of the bag, hand it to the lady. She looks at it and says "We can't do exchanges or returns if the tag is removed" I look at her say "Are you serious?" She then says "We're not supposed to"
I know they do this because people wear things and then bring it back, but we are talking about baby clothes. Do people really do that?
So now I don't know what to do, these were 16.00 overalls. And she can't even wear them. Any suggestions? Should I call corporate or just let it go?

No, you're not the only one. I wouldn't have even tried to take it back, which was why my suggestion was to take it consignment or donate it. ?
You had the tag, a little piece of plastic that held it to the clothing is insignificant. They can easily put the tag back on. If the clothing is clearly not worn/soiled, no upper management at a store should deny the return.
how can clothes clearly not have been worn? I do not understand this. I have many of DDs clothes that look just like new. I guess I should just save the tags, let her wear them for a week or two, then take them back for the next size.
Look, I know that people aren't suggesting what I just said. But the above it why stores have that policy. Don't take the tags off until you try the clothes on your kid. Problem solved. Lesson learned.
I've never had an issue with taking clothing back if the tag has been removed. Sometimes the tag comes off of the little plastic piece or I am too quick to remove the tag. I just take it back with the tag and they reattach it. No biggie.
I would get the tagging gun. Seems like a simple solution and it would save you some hassle in the future. I mean, as long as you aren't wearing the clothes and then retagging and returning then I don't see the big deal.
Besides, I would never be able to take back something Liam had already worn because he spits up all the time and the outfit would definitely be washed at some point before I could get back to the store, haha.
I agree, as long as you aren't being unethical about it. I managed retail for a long time and as long as the clothes don't smell laundered or look worn we didn't mind taking it back because we could just turn around and sell it. Now if you wait to long and the item is clearanced we would only give you the amount it was currently selling for. But I don't think they should have denied the return.

It is very obviouse that they have not been worn. And I have the tag and the little plastic peice.
I would never have even thought to return them if A.)They had been worn B.) It had been an extended time since I purchased the item. I bought them last Friday. My Mom and I are going to try and talk to the manager tomorrow. If she isn't willing to exchange them then we will try corp. if that doesn't work then I will just have to try and sell them.
I normally wouldn't,but I also normally don't spend $16 on a pair of overalls. Well actually my Mom did. I could understand if I didn't have the tag at all. But I had the tag so they just need to put it back on. I am taking it as a learning experice.
As for the driving there. Today I had to go there anyway, and tomorrow my Mom needs to pick up some things. So I'm not making any special trips just for this.
I wouldn't either. However Nordstrom will take things back that have been worn, laundered, and months old.

I was just gonna say that! We found one at a craft store I believe. I'm pretty honest, and I've NEVER used it to return something I've already worn, but sometimes something will hang in my closet for a few days and I'll think "I really am never gonna wear that..." so I'll just put the tag back on and return it.
Some people don't agree with it, but its not like I'm returning stuff thats been used!
So, now, I'm happy they didn't take your tagless clothing back - because for all anyone knows you had your kid wear it (I'm not saying you did, but just because you didn't, there's 10 other people who are trying to dfo the same thing).
I totally agree with this! My husband will tease me sometimes b/c I wash everything that comes in our house, but between not knowing if someone else has worn it and bedbugs, I'm not taking any chances. I once bought a shirt from Target that I didn't try on...I got home and opened the bag and it just reeked of fish. It was so gross. Who knows where it had been.
If you have clothes with tags still on them, it is sometimes possible to take the plastic thing out of the clothes in one piece. It is really easy with sweaters. You can take the plastic thingy off another piece of clothing and put it on the one you have. It is easier if you put it in the seam.
As you can tell, I have been on the receiving end of this type of policy, too. The other posters must have a lot more money than I do because I don't have the money to just give it away and then re-buy what I wanted in the first place (assuming you really like it).
Different stores have different polices on returns/exchanges. If its that big of a deal, only shop stores whose policy works for you.
As someone who worked retail for many years, both as manager and hourly, you would be shocked at what people try to return. It sucks that honest people who have a one time experience (like you have, OP) seem to get screwed but it is completely unfair to bend the rules for some people and not others. So many people will use the "you did it for me before, so you have to do it again" line. I don't think its worth calling corporate, but if you do, more power to you. You may or may not get the result you want by doing so. But please don't be mad at the store employees for doing their jobs.
So we went back today, talked to a manager and she happily exchanged them for us. No big deal.
I understand that people would by an outfit for pictures and take it back. I was not trying to return it. I wanted to get the next size up, so they haven't lost anything.
I took it as a learning experince and in the future will leave the tags on. The overalls are super cute and I was looking foward to her wearing them.
