3rd Trimester

To induce or to wait....

So here I am the day after my due date, and for some reason I never even fathomed still being pregnant - for some dumb reason I thought I would go early.....never really gave much thought to a late baby...

So now my Doc has given the option to induce or wait...and I am really torn on what to do.  I am sooo very anxious to have my baby (obviously), but I keep thinking letting it happen naturally seems like the right way to go.  Especially because I have had a very healthy pregnancy and all so seems like all is on track- my Doc will want me to do stress test and bio-physical if I decide to wait - that will tell us that the baby is OK and still thriving in the womb.....I have talked to some people about inducements along with reading about them online.  Anyone have any advice???  I realize it's my decision, my hubby keeps saying that too...but man the decision is killing me...

Re: To induce or to wait....

  • Personally i would wait.  I agree with you when you say it's better to let things go naturally.  After all - if your doing well and baby is doing well why rush it?  I don't know what a bio-physical is but  my MW did tell me I would be doing a stress test should I go over.  So I think that's standard. Best of luck and go with what you feel is right.

  • I would opt for the induction if my bishop's score was favorable but wait if it wasn't. Has your doctor discussed that with you? Does he think the induction would be favorable based on that?

  • A natural start is more likely to be an easier labor and a baby that is ready to be born. I say go with your gut instinct. I know it is hard to wait, but most first time low-risk mamas aren't really ready to go until after 41 weeks. Best wishes!
  • It's a very personal decision. For me, I waited until I was a week late and then they induced at that point. (I was 90% effaced and 2cm dialated for about about 3 weeks.) This time my OB said they would induce me at 39 weeks if I wanted to?! I personally will wait to see if baby will come naturally but at 41 weeks will get induced if need be. I know people are afraid of being induced but for me it was an awesome, enjoyable experience. Good Luck :)

  • I'd wait, at least until 41 weeks. They won't induce me until 42 weeks...

  • I've been induced twice at 39 weeks. Both for medical reasons (although different ones). My body responded very well to induction both times. It's not necessarily a horror story. I had 2 easy labors and deliveries, minus all the pre-e crap that came along with the first. Given what I know about my body I would choose induction over waiting. Obviously, you don't know how you will respond yet, but it is possible to be induced and have it go very well too, despite what you hear on this board.

  • My Doc hasn't mentioned 'Bishop's Score" at all.  I did a quick search on it to find out what it is.....@ my appt yesterday I wasn't effaced or dialated so I am guessing my score would be low...

  • I'd personally wait, as long as everything looks good with baby. Baby will come when it's ready.
  • I will be induced at 41 weeks as is standard practice at my OBGYN. I am soo hoping I go on my own before, because if not I have a feeling I will try and get them to let me wait as long as everything is okay.

Every single person I know personally who have add inductions say they suck big time and only get relief with epidurals. I am hoping for a natural birth so that is the big reason I want to avoid one.

But like almost all the pp said do what is best for you.

  • Ask your dr to help you determine whether you are likely to succeed with induction. If you have a good bishop's score, then I'd go for it. If it's low, I'd wait a little longer until you're more likely to be successful.
  • I would say it depends on your bishop score because thats a great indicator if it will go well.  Good score and you're ready, go for it.  Low score, then I would say wait a little longer.

I have been induced twice with results on the opposite ends of the spectrum.  DS1 was induced with mucus plug scrape, then pitocin once my water broke and a long difficult labor because he wasn't ready to come yet, but my body couldn't be pg anymore.  MW scraped because my bp hit 194/110 that day and she said it would lessen my time in the hospital.  DS2 was induced because I could no longer sleep even with sleeping pills and was becoming sleep deprived.  I was only 20% effaced by dialated 3 cms.  The problem is that I had been at 3 cms for well over 4 weeks (several trips to L&D and deemed to be in a stalled early labor).  We planned the induction and the Dr. broke my water and DS2 was in the world in less than 4 hours with only an epidural.  I know that I won't progress in labor until I have an epidural (needed it to dialate fully for both boys since it happened within 15 mins both times) so an induction seems necessary for me.

If you feel you're doing good and don't know I would say rely on the bishop score to help you decide.  If you're still on the fence, I would say wait until you know or LO decides for you.

  • I would wait. You're only a day overdue. I get that you're anxious and ready for baby to come but you've waited this long. What's an extra few days? I agree that letting baby come when he/she is ready is the right way to go.

  • I'd wait. Too many things could go wrong.

They gave my boss the option to induce and she really wanted to because she was so uncomfortable because the baby was a little big. And her husband is a teacher and strangely this girl came up to him and said please don't induce. And she was 2 days late.

So I say hang in there hun!

  • I also thought I would go early & now that today is my due date I can't believe I'm still pregnant.  With that said, I scheduled my induction date today for next Friday.  I get what some are saying about it being harder, but I really don't want to be pregnant that much longer.  If you want to do it, go for it.  Everyone is going to have a different opinon, so do what you feel is best.

  • going into labor naturally is more likely to end in a vaginal birth.
