3rd Trimester

Help with heartburn please! :(

I just posted this on 2nd tri as well...

I have never had it in my life until about two weeks ago.  I have mostly been getting it at night and it is pretty awful.  Well, while I was teaching math about an hour ago it started, and now that I'm eating lunch it is lingering.  Ugh.  What do you take for it?  I've heard TUMS, but I'd really rather try something that isn't "medicine."  I realize they are supposedly safe during pregnancy, but I don't even take Tylenol.  Has anyone tried apple cider vinegar?  I found that when I googled, but I want to check with real people before I run out and buy a bottle.  TIA!

  • tums are chock full of calcium and not your typical medicine like pepcid or some other form of relief. ?i don't know of anything else that will really help otherwise.
  • omg, time to drop the hippie stint and take some tums. Why wouldnt you even take tylenol? You arent going to get some medal for being 'med-free' your entire pregnancy post-birth
  • Sorry, but I'm of no help. I just suffer through it.

This is the 3rd PG where I have major heartburn (I never have it otherwise)........

    Hang in there! GL!?

  • Well, I know you said you don't want to take tums, but they have been a lifesaver for me.  I pretty much chase down anything I eat with tums.  I haven't heard of trying apple cider vinegar, but that just sounds nasty to me.
  • I use Tums.  And they worked well for a while, but now I think I'm just stuck with this awful heartburn until my baby is born.  Tums are just calcium, they really are fine to take.  I don't like taking medicine either, as I feel like I'm drugging my baby, but trust me...you've got to do something about the heartburn...it only gets worse the further along you are.
  • Tums is not medicine persay. I take prescription Zantac because the acid reflux can scar your pipe and lead to cancer. Many meds out there do not cross the placenta so talk to your OB.

Avoid: Sugar, Fat, Carbs & Dairy (inclusing milk-OWT) all those things bother it. You can drink milk IF it is Pur Milk from some place like Whole Foods, it is 100% fat free unlike skim which can still aggrivate.

I can't believe SO MANY of you are letting yourself suffer not knowing the dammage  you could be causing to your body by NOT treating it!
  • I've found relief from drinking white milk with meals. I never had heartbrun before either... it's not fun.

  • Sorry, but with heartburn you're going to need to take actual medicine.  I don't take Tylenol either, but with heartburn, there's no avoiding it if it's bad.  The thing with heartburn is it's not like pain you can just deal with and move on, it can actually cause damage to your esophagus if you let it continue.

At first papaya enzymes worked pretty well (you can get them at Whole Foods or Vitamin World) but eventually it didn't work anymore.  Maybe start with that and see how it goes.

Now I take Tums during the day and Zantac every night - otherwise I'm up 3 or 4 times with it.

  • half a tablespoon of baking soda and cold water.
  • Mine is about the worst it's ever been today so I was just talking to everyone at work about it.  Someone suggested drinking baking soda mixed with water.  I just got some Tums though and at home I take liquid Maalox, it works faster.
  • Tum-tu-Tum-Tummmm- TUMMMMS!!!

I've never had heartburn either until becoming PG. I suffered through it for the first half of my pregnancy, now I just take one Tums and its gone in a minute or two. Do yourself a favor and buy a bottle!

  • the baking soda and water trick is what I do when I need to vomit, makes it all come back up fast!
  • TUMS can actually be used as a calcium supplement...I don't think it's very "medicine".
  • I take and anti-acid pill and tums every day... it sucks!

Agreed.  Acid reflux isn't just annoying-it can be very damaging.

  • Peppermint Tea or Ginger Tea are supposed to help.

They sell some stuff by Twinings called "Pure Peppermint" in a green box at Safeway - you won't need to be concerned about caffiene.

For ginger tea, you can just slice up some ginger root and boil it for 5-10 minutes.

  • I am so glad that others are taking Zantac - my Dr said it was totally safe for pregnancy (but I hadn't really heard of anyone taking it) - and Tums just haven't been cutting it the last week for me.  I took my first dose last night, and what a huge difference it made.

  • I take Zantac- a lot of it. nothing else works. Oh and yes, there is a difference between heartburn and acid reflux.
  • I take apple cider vinegar. Be sure to buy the organic kind and not the run of the mill supermarket stuff - that is way too acidic. I take zantac if I'm not at home to drink the vinegar, but honestly, it works just as well. I mix 2 tablespoons with apple and grape juice and that gets it down. Putting it in hot tea works as well. ?It stops the burning right away and evens out the horrible feeling. I have had such insane heartburn that I do this at least twice a day. Tums, milk, maalox, rolaids, etc do nothing for me. Also, ACV has loads of potassium so it helps if you have restless legs as well.
  • I don't like taking medicine either so I never took zantac even though midwife recommended it.  Milkshakes helped me a lot, and trying not to drink water with food is supposed to help also, just drink before the meal and after but not during.

Fortunately, my heartburn is now gone since baby dropped.  Yay!
