No Maternity Clothes Yet?

I'm 18 weeks pregnant and still not "showing". We heard the heart beat two weeks ago and are going in this week to find out the gender. When will I need maternity clothes?

Also, I'm 6'1 (without shoes) and need EXTRA tall length in pants and shirts but no one seems to carry them, except for online through Nordstrom but I'm not about to spend $198 on a pair of jeans I'm only going to wear for a month or two. Any suggestions?

Re: No Maternity Clothes Yet?

  • My sister is very tall too and she recommended JC Penney for maternity clothes because they offer tall sizes that aren't too expensive. I'm not as tall as she is so I don't require the tall sizes but she is 6' and said they worked great for her.

  • JC Penney's talls are really tall. I'm 5' 10" and have one pair of pants from my last pregnancy and cannot wear them without tall heels. It's not my favorite store, but it'll probably be the best bet for you - Gap only carries regular talls in maternity.

Is this your first? I didn't wear maternity clothes until close to 23 weeks last time. This time I started with the shirts about 3 weeks ago and just have been using the belly band on pants until today - got out my jeans and they are still really too big.

  • Thank you! I will have to look into that! Is it weird that I'm not "showing" yet??? I'll have to ask my doctor on Tuesday, but I think it's odd and feel scared like there's something wrong.
  • Yes, it's my first. I have friends who are having children (also their first) and they started showing A LOT at 12 weeks and soon thereafter. I know everyone is different, but it just worries me.
  • Since you are tall and it's your first it may take you longer to show. My sister didn't show or wear maternity clothes until her 7th month. It made me feel fat having to start wearing them a little before my 5th! lol

  • I don't think it's weird, especially if you are tall and have a long torso. I wasn't showring very much last time - even with this one, it depends on the shirt and I expected to show a lot faster with this one than I have. Given that everything is already stretched out.
  • I wouldn't worry too much about not showing yet...I started showing soon after that.  You will probably notice a big difference in the next few weeks.

  • I'm not that tall and the first time, I wasn't showing a ton at 18 weeks.  I think it just varies from person to person and since you're tall, there's more room than with a short person!

I'd check gap maternity if you have one near you.  I've found their average length pants to be pretty long on me (and I'm 5'7" so it's usually not a problem) and I think they carry long length.

  • My cousin is 5'10" and she loved Gap for maternity clothes. I'm not sure if they have changed their pant lengths, though. Sadly I can't borrow any of her maternity pants since I'm only 5'7", but I did commandeer most of her tops. I wore my first maternity top this week, but only because I was getting bored of the few pre-preggo tops I own that are long enough to go with my belly band. That thing has been a lifesaver. I only started showing at week 20, but I have a long torso, so I didn't fret about it.
  • I began wearing maternity stuff about 2-3 weeks ago. I can still pull off regular shirts and stuff but my pants were getting way too tight.

  • I'm not that tall, but I'm 5'10" and still wearing my usual dress pants to work. My usual jeans still fit (although there's a bit more pudge falling out of the top of them unfortunately). I've worn a bella band with some of my snugger fitting dress pants. This weekend I'm going shopping for maternity pants, because the loose dress pants I own are starting to get a little snug.

  • I'm just under 6' and can still wear most of my regular clothes.

I found that Old Navy maternity Tall pants were too short, their regular talls are too short too. Motherhood tall jeans are actually a bit too long. I have to roll up the hems just a bit. I have heard that Gap is good in length but I haven't caved to their prices yet.

ETA: Motherhood tall dress pants are just a touch short. I can still make them work but its close

  • I'm still in all my pre-pregnancy clothes and I'm 2 days from 23 weeks. At my last visit I asked if it is not normal that I'm not showing and she said everyone is different and that I have no reason to be conserned.
  • I am 6'3" and I love being tall....except when pregnant! =) Don't worry about not showing yet. Wiht my first, I was 27 weeks before I started to show due to my height and added torso length.

All of the maternity pants that I have are a little shorter than my normal pants, but I am making them work. They are all Long/Tall's. I have found that dress pants from Motherhood are wayyy too short, but the jeans are okay. I have one pair of Old Navy cords that are okay, but the rest that I have tried from ON are too short. Every other pair that I have is from Gap and they are fine, both jeans and dress pants.

I will say though, that most of my pants were bought (new and used) off ebay. I have found that the newer styles are a bit shorter as opposed to those that are a few years old. (ON and Gap put the year and season of release on the tag). Since tall pants have to be ordered and are usually a little more expensive,I have found that ebay has saved me a ton of money!

Finding shirts that are long enough to cover the bump towards the end is a pain too!

  • I am 6' without shoes and am plus sized so I was having trouble finding pants long enough as well.  I googled tall maternity pants and one of the options that I got was JC Penney.  I ordered three pairs from their website (they were having a 50% off sale) and paid less than $70 total.  Two pairs fit well but the third I'll need to exchange.  Maternity pants are not the cutest thing in the world but luckily they have some cute tops out there to help out.  Good luck!
  • wow 6'1!  one of my baby girls is that tall...she's 17 and beautiful!

I'm fairly tall myself....have you tried the GAP?

The longest pair of pants are in the Worthington brand, they are ment for heels I guess. I work there and have purchased a few of the different brands we carry and this one is longer than any of the others i've tried,  too long for me (5" 6'). I am not a heel wearing person so I have to get them hemmed.

  • I have no idea what it is like to be tall. I am a foot shorter than you. But what about dresses and leggings?
  • i have a long torso, and i've only recently started showing.  only close friends can tell though, it's nowhere near obvious enough that strangers can ask.  i'm still not in maternity clothes.  i'm wearing longer sweaters and a bella band with regular pants.  though the kid is finally starting to move up, so i have a couple pairs of pants that i don't have to wear hte bella band with anymore.  they do sit low though, and were a bit loose to begin with.
