When are you going out on maternity leave?

I'm due March 26th- trying to figure out when to start my leave (I'm a 3rd grade teacher). What are your plans? Also has anyone's doctor mentioned when he/she will write them out of work? TIA

Re: When are you going out on maternity leave?

  • I'm a teacher too, but I'm new to the district and don't get a lot of paid time off, so I'm going to try to work as long as possible-- to my due date or whenever I go into labor-- whichever comes first!

  • I'm also a teacher (I teach home-school students) and am due March 19th.  We have the last week of February off for vacation so I'm planning on having my last day just before that break.  So I'll have about three weeks off before my due date.  Unfortunately since I don't work through the district, just with them, I don't technically get "maternity leave".

  • I'm hoping that I won't be at work when I go into Labor but I will be working up to my delivery date, I am due March 29th, so hopefully close to that day

  • I'm going to work up until my due date, unless my doctor suggests otherwise.  I don't want to go into labor at work because my husband works over an hour and half from where I work and that would get a little complicated.  I'm hoping that the doctor will be able to tell me when I'm getting close and then I'll just stay home for the last few days before I'm due...my husband's drive to our house from his work is only about 25 minutes.

  • I'm a teacher too and due March 12th. I've had two babies in the last four years so I will be lucky if I have enough days to cover the rest of the schooI year after the baby is born :-(. I was out a month before my first two came and it was WONDERFUL. I teach first grade and it's hard to get around and feel like I am doing my job towards the end. I am "planning" on working until the bitter end this time but I know my doctor will sign me out anytime and I just might cave early again :-).

  • I teach too. I'm due Sunday, March 27th. Spring break starts on Monday. I'm working until Friday, March 25th and hoping this baby stays put until then. I do not want to waste maternity leave by sitting at home alone, bored to death, waiting to go into labor.
  • until I go into labor - which I am hoping isn't at work.

  • i think I am going to work up to my delivery day
  • I teach too!

I plan on teaching till I go into labor. I only have 5 weeks of leave, so I don't want to use too many of them before the birth. I'll work as long as I can...

  • My original plan was to go off on the 14th, 2 weeks exactly before my due date.  Now I'm thinking I'll work up until the 25th.  I'm not sure how it works for you ladies, being that you'll be paid through your work (if you get those benefits); whereas I'm paid mat leave through my government, and I need to submit my paperwork probably 2 weeks prior to my payments starting.  So if I'm legally allowed, which I don't know yet, I'll work the first 2 weeks if possible, thus reducing the chance that I'll be going two weeks without any pay!

  • I am also a teacher and I am due on March 21st.  I delivered one week early with my daughter.  Therefore, I am anticipating the possiblity of delivering early with this one as well.  The only problem is that I work one hour away from home/hospital.  I really do not want to work up until my due date and then go into labor so far away from the hospital.  I am thinking that I will work up until March 11th (a Friday) and then that will give me one full work week prior to my due date.

I am a bit more concerned about when to go back to work.  I will have six weeks of sick days that I can take.  However, any time after that will be unpaid leave.  I would like to take off right up until September of the next school year.  However, I am not sure if that will actually be such a great idea (money wise) in the end.

  • I'm also due March 12 and am planning on my last day being March 11.  We'll see :)  I have 31 days of sick leave and Spring Break happens to fall in the middle of my leave time, so I'll have a free week off (yea!).  I was debating whether or not to come back but then realized that I won't get paid for the summer if I don't come back.  I'm willing to work for 5 weeks in order to get paid for that time.

  • The US has it so backwards sometimes!!

In holland I'm required by law to take off 4wks prior to my due date and then have 12wks after.  Glad I'm having this baby here and not there!

  • I also work for the school district, and need as much pay as possible.  I know I get a year so a week or two early isn't bad, but every $ you make before leave adds to the money you'll make when you're off, we only get 55%... so we need every extra penny we can get.  I plan on working right up until I'm 10 cm dialated if I can stand it.  I hate sitting around at home doing nothing!

  • I'm planning to work right up until I go into labor. I don't have enough vacation time saved up to take off any earlier than that.

  • I've already warned my boss that my water is going to either break while I'm at my desk, or before or after work...because I am working up until I deliver.  I thought I got 12 weeks with 6 paid out at 100% and the other 6 at 70%, but it's not looking like that anymore...may have 7 or 8 at 70% and I don't think I can afford that.  We'll see!

  • I'm due March 6th and I would love to work up until the day I give birth! But, my mom's flying from out of state to help me out for a while. I think she plans to fly in the end of February so if the LO doesn't plan an early appearance, I will probably start maternity leave when the future grandma is here.

  • I'm self employed so I do not get any paid time off for maternity leave. Depending on how I'm feeling I will most likely try and work up until the week before, so I can have some time to myself to get stuff ready before the baby comes. Because of my GD I know that the OB won't let me go much further past my due date, so I don't have to worry about sitting at home for weeks on end!

Unfortunately you can't apply for your mat. leave without your ROE and your employer can't issue your ROE until you've finished your last day of work (last time, our HR girl had it ready for me at the end of the day on my last day at work. However, it was dated for a week later as the first week was holidays...so I couldn't take it in until the Monday following my "last day").

With my DD, I took a week of holidays (paid) and my mat. leave officially began one week before my due date....she ended up being 2 weeks late, so i was off work for a month before she showed up!

In Ontario, from what I know, you can't get around the wait time for your mat. leave...it's just a part of the process I guess....unless of course your work is paying you under the table for the two weeks you are waiting. ;)

  • I'm due on a Thursday (March 17), and assuming LO hasn't arrived by then, I'm going to go half-days starting that Monday (March 14), because my parents are coming then. I think that Friday, March 18 will be my last day before maternity leave. I was originally planning to work up until I go into labor, but I'm not sure I want to. :-p  It's so much easier with my job to have a set date that I'll be out (unless, of course, LO comes early), so I can turn over my projects to someone else temporarily.

  • I'm going off at least 2 weeks before my due date. My company lets you take 2 weeks without a dr's note. Then I get between 7-9 weeks paid 100% (depending on vag or c-section).

  • I'm working until I go into labor!  I'm taking the full 12 weeks leave that I'm allowed by law, but I won't get paid a dime.

  • I'd stop now if I could! I'm leaving my job for good when I leave to have LO, so I'm mentally checked out already.

I'm due March 18th and will work until either March 4th or March 11th, depending on Doctor's orders. My commute is 1.5-2 hours each way, so I don't know if she'll want me that far from home right before I'm due.

Thanks for that info!  It's great to have someone else who's been there give me advice, no one at my work seems to know what's going on!!  Unfortunately, I work part-time in retail, so although I get 4% holiday pay (which I can ask for at any time), I don't actually get paid vacation time.  In that case, maybe I'll take my leave starting on the 19th - so I can get my ROE and submit prior to baby.  I can always ask to be paid out for my holiday pay which will be peanuts but better than nothing!!
