NPR - has anyone had a tattoo removed?

I'm seriously considering it.  I got a small one on my ankle in college, b/c, at the time, it sounded like a good idea.  dumb, I know.

blaire is starting to notice it and ask me what it is and says that she wants one.

Just wondering what the process is like, how painful it truly is, and the cost.

and, just fyi, my right shift key is sticking and that's why my punctuation is off.

Re: NPR - has anyone had a tattoo removed?

  • No clue the answers to your question, but DS noticed mine quite some time ago and was obsessed with "wanting one," but now he never says anything about it or about wanting one. I think the newness will wear off with her, if it makes you feel any better about it.

  • I have not had one removed, but boy do I wish I would have listened before I got one of mine. I have three and only regret one. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

I'd like to see any responses about removal, though.

  • I'm so ashamed to even say what mine is.  It's a martini.  I'd never had one, and I've only had one in my life.  and, it purely disgusting.  I guess I got it thinking I'd love them one day.  I remember I just wanted something different fromthe run of the mill butterfly and heart.
  • Wanna feel better?

I got a peace sign. A big freaking peace sign on the side of my leg. It's made up of... naked women. I only saw a peace sign when I picked it. Thankfully, DD is 4 and cannot tell it's women. When she does figure it out, I could lie and say I was into synchronized swimming.

Yeah, you win.  I'm just wondering how painful that was for you.  I about passed out with mine and it's all of 2" in height.

I remember a girl telling me a long time ago about getting one removed.  All I remember is that it wasn't  a one time thing.  It was a process of several appointments.  I'm wondering if the process has changed at all.  and if it's gotten cheaper over time, you know like VCR's. :)

  • I hear getting them removed is very painful.

I was way too drunk for the one on my leg to feel any pain. The one across the top of my back, I passed out twice while he was doing it. I was completely sober for that one though.

I almost want to keep them so I can show my kids what happens when you jump into getting them. But, that might back-fire. DD doesn't even want her ears pierced because she knows it will hurt. Hopefully, she'll feel the same way about tattoos.

  • my friend's mom has been having hers removed for a while.  They do it with lasers and it is a long process.  And if you have dark colors in your tat it takes longer than if it is light colors.  She liked to go tanning all the time too and now can't really do that because the skin that has been lasered doesn't tan as well.
  • I know at my dermatologist's office, they advertise a laser process to remove them.

  • I know I'm replying long after you posted this, sorry!

My sister had a fairly big tattoo on her upper arm.  She had it surgically removed.  They removed that part of skin and then stiched together the parts that were left.  Hers had a lot of green in it and she was told that it would be nearly impossible to remove it completely with lasers.  Many of the people I know who have used the laser treatment, it takes a loooong time depending on the size and color of your tattoo.  Some it never completely faded.

Same thing one of my friends had that done & I don't think the scar looks much better than the tattoo she had in the first place.

Um... I think I will keep my shameful tattoo. That sounds awful!

  • EK- Or you could consider finding someone good to do a cover-up piece that is perhaps a little more to your liking, LOL. Maybe your naked peace sign ladies could somehow morph into something that represents your kids/family. ;-)
  • They always advertise this on our local radio. I have NO idea if it works, but it might be something to look into since it is not surgical.

Hmmmm... this is a good idea. Except there are 5 women and only 4 of us. It's worth it to think of a cover-up, though.

  • I went for a consultation to have mine removed and in the end it would cost me about $1,000 and it might not even be completely gone.  I opted not to do it.
