What items do you save$ on by buying at Costco/Sams?

We just got a Sam's Club membership (no Costco here) and I am going tomorrow morning to do some price comparison between them and the grocery store/Target brand with coupons and sales.

What items do you consistently save money on by buying them at Sams/Costco?   TIA!

  • I've never shopped at either, but my cousin religiously shops at Sam's Club. She said she saves so much money on Huggies diapers that it's unreal.

  • Diapers, cleaning supplies, paper products, and baby wipes.  I don't usually buy food there, unless we're having a party.

  • Toilet paper, paper towels, dishwasher packs, and shampoo/conditioner are things I only buy at Sams.  Oh and honey if you cook with it that's the cheapest place.

  • I would say-

toilet paper, detergent, juice, snacks, cheese fruit, some meat, tyson chicken, gerber graduate meals, and thats all I can think of for now! lol

  • I shop at BJs and I always get diapers and wipes there.  I like that you can use their coupons and manufacture coupons together.

I used to buy toilet paper and paper towels there but I think I get a better deal at Target for those.  But I just started buying chicken there in bulk.  It is way cheaper than any market.

  • Diapers, formula, paper products, cat food.

  • Dog food.  The Kirkland chicken and rice blend is very well rated and much more affordable than some of the equally well rated boutique brands.
  • We get diapers, wipes, Carters PJs, toilet tissue, paper towels, toothpaste, deodorant, detergent, Whole organic milk, fish, chicken, paper plates, cups.  If we're having a party, we get appetizers like meatballs, mini crabcakes, pigs in a blanket, fruit salads, etc..  I love Sams Club and Costco!

We can save enough on dogfood to pay for the membership (We have a St. bernard and a lab they eat a lot)

We also buy babywipes, TP and frozen chicken.

I love the artichoke heats and sundried tomatos that costco has not sure if sams has something like that but they are WAY cheaper at Costco

  • I know there are websites out there that list what things are good to buy and what aren't. Typically you're better off buying paper products elsewhere. Other things depend on your grocery stores. I think I've bought more pajamas for T at Costco than anything else.  I don't buy a lot in bulk because we just don't have the room for it. I can get organic milk cheaper at Kroger

I do buy maple syrup there. Also big jugs of vinegar and bags of baking soda. I'm not sure if I spend enough to make it worth the $35 fee, but I like to have the option.

  • Oh, and contacts. I can't believe I forgot that, but I save enough on contacts to pay for the membership.

Organic milk is a good price if you drink enough of it.  DD doesn't drink milk, so it doesn't work out for us, but if she did that would be a good savings.

And string cheese, the kid goes through a ton of string cheese.

We buy paper products there.  I'm not sure they are a huge savings, but it's nice to buy in bulk so we have to go shopping less often.

Classico tomato sauce.  It's pretty basic in its ingredients.  I don't like to buy prepared foods unless I know all the ingredients and could theoretically make it myself in my kitchen (but don't have time to do so).

I've gotten some good deals on clothes for DD.  And DH has bought some shirts there that he likes.

  • I find that I actually spend more b/c of our Costco membership.

I usually make my grocery list based on our supermarket ad and buy the things on sale.  If you buy mostly sale items, everything is way cheaper than Costco. Plus, my Costco trips usually end up with us purchasing a lot of prepared foods that aren't the healthiest.

That being said, Jarlsberg swiss cheese is super cheap at Costco.  Is it bad I keep the membership for that and something to do on Sundays with the fam...we love free samples?
