I know it's a necessary evil, but both options give me the creeps. I can't imagine having my kid go through either. Maybe our next vacation will have to be a road trip!

Both have their pros and cons. Did you hear about the guy who refused to go through the full-body scanners and then refused to have TSA do the full-body pat down?
from what I understand, Tel Aviv has one of the safest airports and they don't think our scanners add any security. But I agree about the kids, but I also know so many in other countries start in those groups at a young age - it's so hard to balance.

It's crazy to think that we either have to subject ourselves to virtual nudity or being touched by a stranger to get on an airplane.
Wow! I briefly heard about this guy over the weekend but I had not come across his blog. It is all so crazy to me.
I suppose if I had to choose I would go for the scanner because I just cannot wrap my mind around having some stranger grope me (or my kid) just so that I can get on a plane.

They've been using the full body scanners at Tulsa's airport since 2008...one of the first to have them. Honestly? I'll take a scan ANYDAY over a pat down. It feels WAY less violating! Libby and I have gone through them twice and will do so again on Tuesday. According to the experts, they don't expose you to radiation or anything deemed hazardous. And frankly, having traveled in other places where they rummage through ALL of your bags and pat you down, if I have a choice, I'd prefer the hands-free option.
That said, I agree with Julie. I highly doubt these measures increase our safety. The people who want to do harm will find a way around these measures...they always do. That's why things become implemented...like removing shoes...because some wacko tries to use his as a bomb. Incidentally, when I traveled to New Zealand last year they don't require shoe removal. So maybe a terrorist should just take a flight from Auckland to LA if they want to do some damage. Ugh.
We're flying in 2 weeks and we're all going to opt for the pat-down. X-ray backscatter is still using x-rays (hence radiation) and I don't really want to expose LO to it (esp since he's so small). I do feel like the level of radiation is fairly low and not too detrimental to us but it also affects adults less than it would a child.
