follow up re baby carriers

a while back we had Lisa's post about baby carriers (link below)

https://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/36658771/ShowThread.aspx#36658771

i was curious if everyone still felt the same about their carrier.  We have the moby right now & I do like it but LO is just 12 lbs now. I feel that when she is bigger I won't feel comfortable using the moby.  I am mostly thinking about Mardi Gras when you walk a ton around the city.  LO will be about 7 months this Mardi Gras so I need a good carrier that will support a bigger baby & one that is daddy friendly too.

I know a lot of you liked the ergo, baby hawk & angelpack...which is your favorite? pros? cons?

TIA!!

  • Vanessa, check out my FB page (Tara H), there a ton of comments in my status update about carriers a few days ago :)  That should help (a lot of the girls here commented on it as well).

  • we love the ergo.  Comfortable for the adult and must be pretty comfy for the child b/c Jack always falls asleep (love the sleeping hood).

I always have a ring sling in the car, but now that Jack is ~20lbs it's not comfortable for long periods (but still great to slip on for quick shopping trips).

I also have a woven wrap.  They are pricey and little less easy to get on (especially in the rainy wet climate I live in - I can't let the fabric drag on the ground) but soooooo comfy and beautiful.  Definitely not mainstream though, so if you are only going to get one I would get something like the ergo.

  • I have the moby, the babyhawk and the ergo. I loved the moby when Bella was small (from about 2 months until about 6 months) then I loved the baby hawk. I loved the back and front carries and that it was quick to put on (MUCH faster than the moby) and I could use it anywhere when I was in a rush to get her on. Now I love the ergo. She's almost 16 months old and about 22 lbs+ so she's comfortable to wear in that on my back. Just since I started to show more, I can't wear her on the front or this baby starts kicking like crazy, I think she smashes him!

BTW does anyone know where to try to sell my babyhawk? I paid $90 and it's still in amazing condition. Have you sold/bought any carriers from any where that you would recommend? I'd like to get at least $60 for it since it's reversible and in great condition....

  • thanks for the input.  There are just so many choices!!

  • We had a DIY moby-style stretchy wrap which was great until Libby hit about 20 lbs and then it wasn't supportive enough.  I really want a woven wrap (like Robbi has) but I went with an Ergo Sport since for the price I could get something that both me and my hubby would use to wear Libby.  That said, we LOVE our Ergo and so does Libby.  We've only use it to back carry once, but I can see that now that she's older we might use it for that as well as the front carry position.

I still want a woven wrap for myself (more flattering on my figure than a soft structure carrier like Ergo) and might get one now that it's winter and cold and more appropriate to have us wrapped up in fabric. I love the Storchenweige Anna and Vatanai Koira.

The great thing about wraps is that there are SO many options for positions to carry...and they last a long time and are beautiful. Here's some more information: https://extraordinarybabyshoppe.blogspot.com/2010/08/woven-wraps-vs-stretchy-wraps.html

You might check out The Baby Wearer...they have all sorts of comparison charts and feedback about so MANY carriers (wraps, SSC, etc.):

Also the Attachment Parenting board has a ton of mamas who wear their babies and they can give you a lot of advice too:

  • I have the Ergo and I really like it (we have actually temporarily have a 2nd one too and we use both of them a fair amount). I think the only thing is I'm unsure on how to wear him on my back when putting it on myself (without a sofa or something to help) so I always wear him in the front...

  • Jack doesn't *love* being in the ergo in a back carry but I think it's because he is spoiled by the woven wrap because in that I can tie him on quite a bit higher so that he can look over my shoulder (and in our hiking carrier - he's up quite high).  In the ergo he has to look side to side in order to see because it's like carrying him piggy back style at waist level.  But it's is still my fav in terms of ease of use and quickness.

Last night I had him bundled up in multiple layers to go to a football game (not quite as bad as the kid in Christmas story - but close, haha) and then put him on my back in the ergo for the long walk across campus and up the ramps at the stadium.  He had a great time and whenever I stopped he would bounce himself in a way that I knew meant giddyup mama, being still is boring.  Funny.

Ditto this. Exactly! LOL. I used the Hotsling at first, then Moby, then BabyHawk and Belle... When she got heavier, we've been Ergo all the way. I like that the Ergo has a sleeping hood and a pocket to put keys, wallet, diaper, etc. So that might be handy for Mardi Gras!

Sarah... Have not sold a carrier yet but plan to. Have you checked out Diaper Swappers? Also, why sell your BH? I assumed you'd use it for #2...
