AFP test came back abnormal - any success stories?

Hi,

I am 16 weeks pregnant and at 12 weeks, I had a NT scan and everything came back perfect.  Now I went in last week and gave blood at 15 weeks for the AFP test and my Dr. called today and said that the results are abnormal.  So they have schedule me for an appt at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow to do a full anatomy scan, etc.  I was not expecting any of this and now I am a nervous wreck because I am wondering what could be wrong.

Has this happened to anyone and went on to have a healthy pregnancy and baby?

  • if this is the same as the quad screening, then it has a very high false positive.

  • not personally, but a friend "failed" the afp, baby is completely fine.

  • i had a quad screen that came back abnormal and i have had 2 level 2 u/s and going in for another one on tuesday. it is kind of scary but like pp have said there is a high false positive rate and it is not a conclusive test. so far my LO is just fine (no physical abnormalites that they can see). they offered an amnio but i declined. i feel pretty good about my 99.5% chance of baby being just fine.

  • You're so lucky to have the scan tomorrow!  I had to wait 2 weeks for my scan and didn't know what questions to ask the dr./nurse in the mean time to allay my fears.

DD was perfectly healthy.  My AFP indicated a risk for spinal issues because they were off on my due date by 2 weeks.  Apparently (according to the genetic counselor we met with prior to the scan) there are certain levels of AFP that are normal at different weeks of the pregnancy and being off even by a week in EDD can cause an "abnormal" reading.

She also asked if I knew what the number was for my AFP (I didn't) and she told me it was something like 2.25 or 1.25.  She then explains that there's a scale from -2 to 2 (or maybe -1 to 1) that's considered "normal" levels.  Anything over or under that would be considered a "risk"....even a value of 1.1.  She said that when babies have real problems, numbers are in the hundreds.

I'm sure everything is going to be fine.

  • I'm having my quad screening right after Thanksgiving and they're doing the scan at the same time just to be sure on the EDD. The OB said it's because actual due date made such a difference in the numbers. I haven't had any sort of prior u/s. They don't have anyone who does NT scans yet.

  • My results showed high AFP and based on my age and results that factored to a 1:160 chance of an NTD.  (We also had a clean NT scan.) After talking with a genetic counselor who was very helpful we decided to wait until our level-2 u/s to decide on an amnio. For us, we had to wait 3 hellish weeks for the L2. It was very hard to wait, but worth it. Baby looked just fine and our risk factor changed to 1:1600. We decided to still not do the amnio since the level2 u/s is 90% accurate and an amnio is 96% accurate but carries risk of loss. Hang in there!
