has anyone tried Metformin and gotten prego on it? I'm going to be starting Metformin not to get prego, but for my diabetes, but I've heard it helps with getting prego too. IMy doctor thinks I have PCOS
There are many women on this board with PCOS and on Metformin. None of us, however, are pregnant, as this is the Trouble Trying to Conceive board. You may find a few Metformin alone success stories on Pregnant After IF or Sucess After IF, but most have had to do more treatments than that. Good luck.
Trying to grow our family with both fertility treatments and adoption since March 2009
I can understand your excitement after being told it can help. But remember nothing is a "sure thing". I too was given Metformin for my diabetes back in March. Before we hit the one year mark of trying. Now after seeing an RE we know that DH has sperm issues and I have low progesterone. Met alone might not be all you need. But good luck to you.
Hi, I've been taking Metformin a for a couple years to maintain my sugars etc b/c i'm "pre-diabetic" and also have pcos. Now that we're trying to get pregnant my RE increased the dosage to help w/ that in combination w/ clomid etc. good luck!
I was put on Met a few years ago, then taken off, then put back on (long story). I was looking into starting a clinical trial for Clomid and another drug I can't remember the name of and while getting information about the drugs they would be testing the doctor told me that several years ago they did a 3-way blind study with Metformin & Clomid, and it didn't show that Met dose anything to help women get pregnant. That kind of confused me because the doctor who prescribed it said it was shown to help, so I don't know who to believe. My thoughts are that it helps our metabolism and sugar intake, which can help us lose weight and that in turn helps regulate our hormones leading to hopefully a BFP.

I am currently on metformin (1700 mg) and actos (30 mg). They are the same type of drug, but my endo wanted to be aggressive to help me ovulate so he prescribed both. I have PCOS and he diagnosed me as being insulin resistant, however my glucose numbers were normal. The way he described it to me is that it will somehow help suppress the high amount of testerone in my body to help me ovulate.
I started it Aug. 2. Within 2 weeks, I ovulated and had a 27 day cycle. Since then, I have ovulated in both subsequent cycles, but I did O later in my cycle (day 21 and then 30). I, unfortunately, am not pregnant yet, but we were only allowed to TTC for 2 of the cycles that I ovulated so I still have hope.
Also, it may make a difference what dosage you are on. The therapeutic dose (the dose or amount of the medication that it takes for it to "work") for metformin is 1500 mg .

i'm not pregnant, but i have been diagnosed with PCOS and my RE prescribed it to help me. I have not ovulated naturally in i dont know how long and havent had a natural period (3 times on provera) since i quit taking BC on 12-26-09. My doctor told me about those studies that said the drug didnt work, but said they started Metformin and Clomid at the same time. Studies where the Metformin was started 2 months before Clomid were shown to have very good results, so that's what he did for me. I have lost 10 or 15 pounds in the month i have been on it. I take 1000 mg a day. I still havent had a period, but he said if that happens i will just have to take provera again before i take Clomid in December.
I take 1500mg daily and I do have regular cycles and appear to be ovulating normally. I have PCOS with insulin resistance. I hope it is successful for you. I had min side effects in the beginning and now none.
