Moms of 1+ year olds

Shortly after 12 months did your LO begin throwing tantrums?  It is CRAZY, like someone flipped a switch.  All of a sudden Nathan is throwing tantrums when he doesn't get his way.  I'm hoping it's a phase!

Please tell me it's a phase!

Re: Moms of 1+ year olds

  • Yep that's when they started ;) I am sure they really don't stop until we are past the terrible two's....

  • yes, Angelica has gotten a couple of those when she doesn't get her way.  Be strong mama
  • This is around the time that my friend who has a LO (he's now 2) started instilling Time-Outs.

If everything was ok with him (meaning there was no reason for the tantrum other then a mood or crankiness), she would put him in a corner for 2 solid minutes.

If he tried to leave the corner she would put him back and walk away to the other side of the room (trying not to look at him as he is throwing this full blown tantrum) - after a couple of times of this he caught on.

He would cry like it's a bloody murder, but then go back to mom and say "Soyee Mommy" and was ok after it.

It pulled him out of the situation, and worked like a charm.

Now we can sometimes just give him a time-out warning and he obeys (Most times..).

Sometimes (not often) we have to do this in a public situation. We usually try to go as far away from other people as possible but still will give him a timeout if he needs it.

    Hope this helps.

Ha! putting a one year old in a time out. That's laughable. If he could apologize, I bet he was a lot older than 12 months.

I'm not so sure time out is an option.  I just can't believe it went from happy baby to tantrum baby overnight!

  • Oh yeah... It can be super embarassing at times. Most of the time if I can't redirect, I make sure he cant injure himself and than walk away and ignore him. We go through about 10 tantrums a day, no joking either. Crying

  • Marcos just started doing that too. If I try to take something away from him he will bite me.
  • Yes, Z has tantrums too.  I started doing time-outs with him at about 1 year and they work most of the time.

How are you doing the timeouts?  I can't figure out any way to put a 16 month old in time out.

This is something we were just discussing at playgroup this week and nobody really had an answer.
