  • Totally butting in but has anyone heard that within this bill they're wanting to hold active duty pension checks until they're 60? Also wanting to merge AAFES and DECA with a 5% increase in prices? I want to do some more research but haven't had much time to today. It was the sqd Thanksgiving lunch and all that cooking this morning wore me out, lol. All those au gratins gone in less than 5 min, all 4 huge pans of them.

I saw that in the petion you posted but havent gone very far with looking into it. I want to know how raising prices is going to save me money? Sounds kind of backwards to me. but what do I know, Im just a lowly Marine Corps wife.

Their goal isn't to save us money, it's to save the government 1 billion dollars for who knows what reason. Fine, I could see merging AAFES and DECA, fine. But a 5% hike in the prices. And, one of the huge benefits to going AD is that when you retire you get half your check for the rest of your life. To want to hold that til people are 60. How ridiculous.

completley agree.  for those who did 20 years the retirement money is a huge deal.

sorry for no caps.  my shift is stuck again.

eta- i'm pretty sure there are lots of other places they could save the govt money.  going after the military is bull.

  • What pisses me off about the cuts is that Congress never makes any cuts for them. They don't have to pay into social security or participate in the new healthcare if it goes into effect. They continue to vote themselves pay raises and then want to make cuts that affect the people they are suppose to represent.
  • Wow, I really hope this does not get approved.  Its bad enough that military housing is being handed over to civilian agencies to run and that they take your full BAH amount and now, on top of that, want to start charging utilities if you go over what they think is appropriate.   Freezing our BAH won't help anything.  Housing prices are still going to go up every year and more and more military members are going to find themselves in financial trouble if BAH does not rise to go with this trend.

I'm sure they can find better places to cut back on funds without hurting the men and women who serve our country.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you all on the retirement thing.  You may think it's ridiculous to postpone giving people their pensions, but I think it's ridiculous that someone could theoretically go into the military at 18, retire at 38, and then collect a pension for 40-50 years based on the 20 they put in.  I know not everyone retires at 38, but many people do retire in their 40s.  I, for one, don't see how the government can continue to fund this.  I would much prefer the pension be delayed until age 60 than the government going bankrupt and DH getting a big fat zero in pension dollars.

My DH and I have had many discussions on this, and we agree that the government just can't sustain this pension thing.  We've discussed several fixes, including delaying collection or switching from a pension system to a TSP with a match.  I think the government will have to go in one of those directions.  Otherwise, the math just doesn't work.  Just in case we do get completely screwed out of a pension, we don't count on it when planning for retirement even though DH plans to do 20 (I plan to get out after my initial committment), which is why we agressively save in TSP and IRAs.
