When did you start solids?

We have Reese's 4 month appt tonight (they will also check her head, which I am a nervous wreck about).  Our pedi had mentioned at her last visit that they will give the ok for rice cereal at 4 months.  Everything I have read says that it is better to wait until 6, so that was my plan (to start a couple weeks before her 6 month visit).  When did you start solids with your LO, & do you feel it was a good time?

Re: When did you start solids?

  • We gave K applesauce on her 5 month birthday.  She was super gassy.  The next night we gave her rice cereal.  She was so gassy she screamed her little head off.  We waited a week and then tried sweet potatoes.  Much better.

So officially she started eating solids at 5 months and 1 week.  We started with only dinner and didn't add breakfast until much later, 6.5 months.  And only recently I started giving her lunch too, around 7.5 months.  Lunch gets in the way of my life so I held out for as long as possible.

  • We've introduced solids when Sam was a little over 4 months old. He now eats pear, banana, apple, carrots and brown beans. In Holland you can start solids starting from 4 months, if both sides of the family are allergy/asthma free, luckily we are.

But we didn't start a "solids only" diet yet. The solids are just to have him get used to other tastes then milk. When Sam turns 6 months old (next week) we'll slowly be putting him on a solids diet, with only a couple of small bottles (our pedi has a good "menu" for it). But now with Sam being sick, we'll just wait and see how it goes. He has refused all solids the last few days and I'm just grateful he's taking bottles again. Still not up to par, but he's getting there.

It's the same here in France.  We started Nathan on solids shortly after four months.  We actually started with the veggies and didn't make it to cereal until later.  I should say though, that there is no rice cereal here so that was not an option for us.

  • around 4 months, we started with peas
  • I gave Caroline a few tastes of rice cereal and banana around 5 months or so, but didn't really start until 6 months.  DH was pretty adamant about waiting until 6 months and I was okay with it, but I was just so curious to see what her reaction to solids would be.  That's the only reason I gave it to her sooner.  Also, she really didn't seem ready until about 6 months.

    This exactly.

Us too. She tasted several things but just made faces and slit it out. Then around 6 months something clicked, and she ate like it was her job. We didn't really give her rice cereal because I heard it is so constipating, but we started with pears and she still got constipated Sad
  • We plan on waiting until he is 6 months old before we do any solids, but I am definitely getting curious as to how he will react. He is showing all the visual signs that he is ready for them (different mouth movements, etc.), but our pedi also thinks its best to wait until as close to 6 months as possible.

Reese has been "chewing" a lot lately. She just sits there & chomps on air.

K started doing that when we were eating.  It was hilarious.  And she would watch us.  The food from the plate to the mouth.  She would get all excited when it got close to our mouths too.  The whole thing was hilarious.  And it started around 4 months.

Our 4 month appt isn't until the 29th and I don't know my pedi's feelings on it, but I want to wait as long as possible before introducing solids so I'm planning on closer to 6 months as well.

  • C definitely watches us eat too! He is such a chunk you would think I was feeding him steak and potatoes every night. He has started sucking on his bottom lip constantly, which I guess is a sign of teething, but is one thing my pedi said he should be able to do (suck in his bottom lip) before offering foods, so he can help pull the food in
  • I'm waiting as long as possible :) 6 month birthday or after.

  • Not that I know much, but this was the topic of conversation over dinner with our neighbors last night. Max is 4 months old and the pedi told them to start with rice cereal and then move onto veggies. I always heard 6 months - but I guess 4 months is the way around here.
  • I let her have her very first taste of 'naner around 5.5 months, but we did not move onto other things or full feedings until 6 months.  I was pretty set on waiting until she was 6 months old to allow her digestive system to mature a bit more.

Most peds are only required to take 3 credit hours on nutrition during their studies.  Personally, I don't think this is enough.  I like my ped, but when it comes to this, I totally trust "Super Baby Food" more than him!!!

"Super Baby Food" says wait till 6 months and avoid commercial, processed cereal at all costs, so this is what we did, and it's been perfect.  Hayden eats like a champ- we have yet to find a food she won't eat!

  • I guess I just don't understand why so many pedis recommend solids at 4 months when the AAP recommends waiting until 6 & all of the research shows that it's healthier to wait.
  • I've read that the 4 month rec is outdated. I've also read that its geared toward formula fed babies. Who knows

  • My pedi said he recs 4 months for FF babies and 6 months for BF babies.  Not sure what the difference is.  He did say we could start before 6 months if we want, but I don't think we will.
  • We started at 4 months with G and I felt it was too early for her....we gave her rice cereal which I will never give another baby again because she got sooo much gas from it...and then we started her on squash,,,she loved that, but then a few weeks later wanted nothing to do with solids..no matter what I gave her she would not eat it...Than about 2 weeks ago, she started eating anything I gave her...so I think 4 months was too early for G, but that does not mean it is like that for every child....
