have you ever heard of..

Someone actually passing out from pain while in labor? What would happen if you did pass out? Automatic pain drugs? Keep you knocked out and c-section?

I always say when I had DD if I hadn't got the epi I would have passed out. It was more of a way to describe my pain level and shaking not really thinking people can actually pass out from the pain. I was just reading birth stories and few other woman said the same thing I do. So im wondering if it actually happens commonly?

    Ive had a natural birth. I would think because of your adrenaline levels you would not pass out. It kinda goes against nature...

    That's what I was thinking, were made to have children I would assume we wouldn't faint. But people faint for a lot of different reasons and I have heard of people fainting from pain so I wasn't sure.

    It can happen.   It's not common.  They don't just "keep you knocked out and c-section."  They would likely administer oxygen via mask or nasal cannula and give you a smelling salt.  They would have probably hyperventilated their way to fainting.  Though, if you passed out from pure "pain", that's basically considered a shock-type reaction.  Either way, they would almost certainly administer pain medicine, but they wouldn't do an epidural without consent.  It's an invasive procedure.  If you were to experience that much pain it would likely be during the transition or crowning and expulsion, and it's too late for an epidural anyway. 

    My advice, don't read so much.  Especially birth stories.  Reading Alfred Hitchcock would be less scary.

    Im really not worried about labor and delivery at all this time. It may kick in closer to the time of it happening but DD's induced labor was pretty bad and I feel like it prepared me for a lot of what can happen. I was just wondering if my figure of speech was something that really happens.

    You can deliver a baby in a coma, and since they need consent to give you a c-section or an epi I don't think they would jump to that. They would probably just try to rouse you and give you pain meds. I'm sure it happens- my sister spent her entire labor vomiting from the pain and doesn't really remember actively pushing, her body just did it. I'm sure if you passed out in active labor that your body would be fine without you- maybe even better if you were fighting your contractions.

    Back in the day, they actually knocked the woman out and then she woke up with a baby in her arms.. and she gave birth vaginally. I'm sure if you passed out they wouldn't have to give you a c-section.

    For me, I didn't have the epidural and I was in enough pain that I was throwing up and shaking from the back labor.... but I still got through it, and it wasn't as bad as I thought. Going in expecting the worst really prepares you! LOL

    If you need an emergency c-section and your spouse/health proxy isn't there to sign, they can do it without your consent.  It only takes the signatures of two doctors.  But they don't just keep you out...  if you won't wake up that's another thing.

    My MIL said that she passed out and the doctors pushed their hands inside of her and assisted the baby in comming out.  She said that she woke up after the baby was born.

    By the way, in my country (Trinidad), in the general hospitals where approximately 90% of deliveries take place, they don't give you epi or pain meds.  This is only administered if you are having a c-section. 

    So yeah....we women go completely natural
