1st Trimester

Please tell me I'm not alone in this...(vent)

It's not that I'm not crazy happy to be pregnant because I am. However this insane weight gain that has already begun has made me feel terrible about myself. My DH and I just got home from telling his grandma and then we stopped to picked up a Papa Murphey's pizza. I cried the whole way home about how I'm only 8 wks and have already gained weight and can't fit into anything (of course the whole time staring at the pizza thinking that I would eat it raw if it weren't for risk of listeria, or whatever). I have always struggled with my weight. I lost quite a bit for our wedding 3 1/2 mos ago and since then I've gained 10 lbs. I just don't understand this appetite! It's insatiable! I have had little to no nausea but just the opposite. I'm making him tell people now instead of waiting until the end of first trimester so they don't just think "man, she got married and let herself go real quick". Ugh...

  • I feel the same way. Fortunately, I haven't gained any weight yet...but I do know what you mean about always being hungry!!! I am sure it's only a matter of time before I see the scale going up. I just try to remind myself that I am not literally "eating for two." It's definitely hard. I also try and walk a few times a week, but it is getting so cold here that I am not sure that will last much longer. Good luck and know you are not alone :)

  • I'm fully aware that it sucks. After my first all my weight shifted and I just wasn't used to and down on myself.

However, you have to change your attitude and stop thinking about everything you put in your mouth. You're pregnant. The weight gain is going to happen and all for a good reason. Make good choices most of the time, get some exercise and don't worry about the rest.

  • Try not to stress!!  I gained quite a bit of weight in the 1st tri and very little in the 2nd.  During the 2nd tri you start feeling better, less tired and you will be more active.

Also, every woman's body is different and will gain weight differently.  I gained 50 lbs throughout my pregnancy and lost 40 in the first 3 months.  It was just the way my body dealt with that pregnancy.  Enjoy all the different stages because time goes so quickly!

  • I felt the EXACT same way you do my first time around.  I was so sick in the begining and ate carbs hoping they'd make me feel better.  I gained a lot up front because of that - 10-15ish, but only a total of 25 by the end.  I hated myself and hated the way I looked until the third trimester even though I wasn't even overweight to begin with.  I had previous weight issues and could not get used to being pregnant, especially when I wasn't looking really pregnant - just fat.  It was just my issues.  I just watched what I ate once I started feeling better.  I really never ate whatever I wanted because I wanted/because I was pregnant.  Some people just let go, and well I ate like a person watching their weight.  I did not diet, but I did not allow a second donut just because I was pregnant.  I ate a salad for lunch everyday, but still had treats here and there.  I just did not want to have to lose crazy amounts of weight after DD.  Ultimately, nursing and eating reasonable/healthy helped me lose all my baby weight plus some more.  I was on a crazy soy/dairy free diet due to nursing, and I am sure that helped, but when I was done with that I still kept the weight off.
My recommendation is just grin and bear it for now.  Once you have a cute belly, you will feel so much better about it all.  Eat healthy and try to be active.    GL!

No kidding. You're pregnant. You didn't expect to lose weight did you? It will slow down. For most people if they gain a lot right away, they won't gain as much later. It evens out.  Chill.

  • It's interesting, because I remember being stressed about weight the first time around. But, I feel like I have a different relationship with my body now. It's smart. It grew a baby and fed that baby for a whole year with very little help from me. Listen to your body - if you are hungry, it's telling you that you need food. Like other people said, don't overdo it on the sweets, exercise once in a while, and listen to what your body is telling you - it's smarter than you think!
  • I hear ya!  I actually had to do the rubber band trick on my pants today at work.  I am almost 6 weeks and am feeling like this is way too early! Uggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm a pretty active person and carried some extra weight before but was by no means "fat". Before finding out I was pregnant I did an aerobic walking program 10-20 miles /week. Now I have cut that down to about 6 miles /week and modified a lot of the movements to make them more low impact. Yes, I do realize I'm pregnant and that my body is changing. And I am listening to my body and eating when hungry and laying off the sweets. I have just been reading too many posts and seeing photos of women way further along with their pregnancies and experiencing things different. This is my first so everything is just that, a first, and I guess I just needed a little reassurance that I am normal. Thanks for listening to my gripes. Smile

  • Honestly once your actual baby bump starts showing instead of just the bloat you will feel a lot better.  I feel same way its horrible want to stay in big baggy sweatpants cause I feel so bad about myself, but I also remember my belly being so big last pregnancy it made the rest of me look so much smaller.

  • I'm an early gainer too - w/ DS #1 I gained 8ish pounds in the first tri, got up to 28 pounds and lost a few for a total of 24 pounds when I delivered.  I was underweight when I got pg w/ #1 and borderline this time; the gain is hard to see, and it seems to be a little bit everywhere - hips, thighs, etc.  I'm 11 weeks pg now and have gained about 7 pounds already.

I'm a runner and ran my entire first pg (until put on bedrest), I'm still running 50ish miles/week now.  If you are feeling well enough, there's no reason you can't continue to exercise.  Exercise really helps me feel better :)

  • You are growing a human inside of you. Your body needs fuel, so of course you may feel hungry all of the time. If you are so worried about gaining weight, you could have bought a salad instead of pizza. I have no sympathy for you.

  • Try not to worry about it so much. With my first I gained 26 lbs and lost 38 in the first 6 weeks just by breastfeeding. I'm actually starting this pregnancy 10 lbs lighter then my first and trust me, I ate everything in sight when I was nursing. LOL.
