North Dakota Babies

Waking to feed question

During our BF class they mentioned that you should wake your kid to feed in the middle of the night if they are not waking up to feed. I just have a hard time understanding this but can see if this was the case in the first couple of weeks/first month. But is this the case once they get older too? Thanks for the advice!

Re: Waking to feed question

  • You only have to wake them until they get back to their birth weight or if they're having weight gain problems.  I never actually had to wake G.  He never forgot to eat! :)

This! Friends of ours we had over when their baby was 8 weeks and she was still waking the baby to feed, she had no idea that it was only until they gain back or have issues, poor thing Stick out tongue

  • We had to wake K up after her two day wellbaby appointment when we found out she had lost more weight, she lost 12% of her birth weight and they worry after 10%.  We had to wake her up every two hours and take her back to the doc for weight checks daily until she surpassed her birth weight.

  • I never BF, but I would guess it's supposed to be the same with formula.  I never woke Caroline up to feed her.  I have a sleepy baby and I just let her sleep.  She was not only back to her birthweight by her 2 week appt, but she surpassed it by a half of a pound, so I guess we didn't have any wieght gain issues.
  • They told us never to wake up to feed...since he ended up gaining all of his weight back it wasn't a problem.

  • I had to wake S to feed her (every 2 hours) until her Jaundice (which causes a sleepy baby) was under control.
  • Never wake a sleeping baby!!!!  (That's my motto)

That being said, Caroline had no problems gaining weight and woke on her own to feed so we didn't have to worry about it.  She rarely missed a meal!
