1st dr appt and folic acid?

So, I had  my first dr appt today. He said everything looked and felt good. I guess my uterus is exactly the way it should be for being 5 1/2 weeks pregnant. I have an u/s on the 1st of Dec to hear the heartbeat. Can't wait. However he told me to take 400mcg more of folic acid on top of my prenatals. I have 800 in those. That seems like a lot to me, Question is what are you ladies taking for folic acid?

Re: 1st dr appt and folic acid?

  • i take 400 mcg of folic acid in the morning and my prenatal that has 800 mcg at night.

  • My vitamins have 800 mcg of folic acid too, and that's all I'm taking, but I haven't seen the Dr. yet.

  • Ok, that is what he wanted me to take 400 an 800 thanks
  • I too am only taking the 800mg that is in my prenatal vitamin however on a side note: I am also taking a calcium supplement of 500mg.  All my girlfriends have been telling me of their horror stories of lost calcium due to baby (mostly cavities and mass bone loss later).  I haven't consulted my doctor about this but I'll bring it up next week at our apt.
  • Our doctor has told us at both appt's that I need to be taking 1200mg daily. So yes as part of my prenatal and a 400mg supplement along with it.

  • My prenatal has 800mcg, and my midwife told me to take an additional 400mcg.

  • I'm taking a prenatal with 800 mcg folic acid - my CNM said this was fine.

  • My pnvs have 300mcg each. They are 3x a day pills but I only take 2.

so 600mcg plus an additional 1000 mcg pill -

total of 1600 mcg a day

  • I take 8mg/day, but levels that high are only avail by prescription. I had a son with a fatal NTD, and I have a disorder that prevents me from absorbing FA like normal people do.

It's water soluable, so you don't need to worry about ODing until once you reach 10mg+/day.
