XP: Clicky poll - HELP, to swaddle or not to swaddle

We have been swaddling DS from the very beginning.  Around 2 weeks of age we learned the Happiest Baby on the Block way of swaddling.

DS slept phenomenally in the hospital when swaddled (though he was just a newborn and probably still groggy from my epi).  But when we got home he hated it.

However, we've stuck with it b/c DS flails his arms and legs sooooo badly if he's not swaddled.  Even if he is swaddled he fights it really bad and looks like he's having a boxing match or doing gymnastics in the swaddle.  He ALWAYS gets at least one arm out.

It is the worst in the early morning hours (4 am - 7 am).  He gets fussy and fights the swaddle and wakes up during his light sleep phases and wakes up fussing and crying.  However, if we leave him unswaddled he also wakes up.

We don't know what to do and are torn in which method to let him sleep.  Everything I read about babies says to swaddle them to help them with their reflexes

My sister came over one night last week to take care of my DS b/c I was extremely stressed out and when she took over after he woke up in our bedroom at 11:30, she put him back down in his crib (which he had never slept in).....and she did not swaddle him - she just tucked a blanket over him in the creases of the crib.  He slept for two, 3 hour sessions for her.  At that point we hadn't gotten many 3 hour sessions out of him, much less two in one night.

We tried laying him to sleep w/ no swaddling since my sister did and he still flails really badly and wakes up.

We've tried swaddling, swaddling just his torso and legs, and not swaddling and just tucking a blanket over him.

Ladies....WWYD if this was your LO?  Would you swaddle him or try not swaddling him? [Poll]

  • Do whatever works for your LO. There's no hard and fast rule about swaddling. It works for many LOs, including my own, but not for all LOs.

Yeah, I get the same thing, usually followed by "oh thats so cute" or a strange WTF face. I don't care what anyone else thinks. I love his name and it totally fits is little personality.

  • Our son is colicky too. We do a  half swaddle. He hates his hands and arms tied down so we start the swaddle from under his arms. This seems to make us all happier. Wink

  • I know its controversial but have you tried the special swaddling sacks like Miracle Blankets or the SwaddleMe?

They look like baby straight jackets but they work. My DD was the same way (Flailing... fussy.... angry to have her arms down) but we got the swaddleme and now she sleeps 5 hour stretches at night. During the day when she naps, we just do the blanket tuck and she's happy with that as well.
