Eva or Ava?

DH and I are at odds on how to spell Eva/Ava  (AY-vah)

I think Ava. DH thinks Eva. I think Eva will be said as E-Vah.

What are your thoughts?

Re: Eva or Ava?

  • I think if you are going for the "Ay-va" pronounciation then you should use Ava. I would pronounce Eva like Ee-va (like  in Eve.)

  • On the contrary, Eva is alternately pronounced EE-vah, or in Spanish-speaking communities (or to those familiar with Spanish) it can be pronounced AY-vah. I'm sure there are some parents out there who use Eva and want it pronounced EHV-ah, too, though I usually see that spelled Evah.

If you want to reduce confusion, go with Ava. No one will mispronounce it.

If you're Hispanic, go with Eva, but understand that a fair number of people unfamiliar with the Spanish pronunciation will pronounce it EE-vah.

  • Eva is the German way of spelling "Ava." But personally, I think you will spend your life correcting people if you spell it Eva in the US. It's up to you.

Unless they've met me, or some other person who goes by AH-vahWink

But the folks who pronounce it this way are definitely in the minority...

LOL. But you're an exception to the rule. Even if I had met you and you pronounce it AH-vah, I'm still going to assume that nearly all of the Avas I meet pronounce their name AY-vah: )

  • I would go with Ava just to be on the safe side.

  • I would think that Ava would be less likely to be mispronounced, considering it is the #5 most popular name in the US.
  • Ay-vah is Ava

    Ee-vah/Eh-vah is Eva

This. I prefer Eva, as in EE-vah.

  • I would spell it Ava.

We are going with Eva but pronouncing it Ee-vah?

  • While Eva can legitimately be pronounced ay-vuh, the only no-fail spelling for that pronunciation is Ava.

  • For the sake of all other non-Hispanic Eva-folk out there (I'm an Eva (E-Vah), please spell it Ava if you want people to call her Ay-Vah.
  • Ava. She won't have to correct people for the rest of her life about how to pronounce her name.

100% agree.  DH and I LOVE the name Eva (E-vah), but we didn't want to have people mispronouce her name and have to correct people her entire life.  Because of this, we chose an entirely different name for DD #2 :o(
