Rapid Weight Gain

Hi,

I am 15wks this week and so far I have gained 10lbs.  This is double what the books and everything say I should have gained.  Should I worry? This is my first pregnancy and I have had a history of an eating disorder (which I have been "cured" of for almost 10 years).

The rapid gain is what is on my mind. I am trying really hard to focus on the fact that it is for baby, but it has been weighing heavily on me.

Please help!

Re: Rapid Weight Gain

  • Im in the same boat as you, except I have gained 14 pounds.... I workout everyday and keep a food journal.... even count calories, crazy i know, but I gain weight so quickly with pregnancy I have to keep a close eye on it... with my first I didn't watch enough and gained 50 pounds!!

I was freaking out initially, but I noticed lately I have stayed about the same, my mom said with her pregnancy she gained a lot at first, and not so much the 2nd half... so just keep active, eat healthy, and don't overstress about it, not good for baby anyways... if your weight gain is something to worry about your doctors will tell you...  I was pretty lean when I got pregnant so I just keep telling myself my body must have needed the extra weight... good luck to you...

  • Considering you had an eating disorder, I am going to assume you were very thin to begin with. Your body has probably just added on extra pounds to be pregnancy-ready. You do need some fat storage for the baby in case you under-eat.

The same thing happened to me; I actually gained 9 pounds the first MONTH. I was not pleased. I ultimately gained 40.

I am now six weeks postpartum and have 20 pounds left to lose, but I am finally able to get back in the gym and already feel better.

  • I actually had an eating disorder for about 10 years, but that was almost 10 years ago, so I was at a normal weight for my height when we found out we were pregnant.  Thanks for the words though, ladies.  I will def. watch my gain, and will chat with my mom about what her patterns were like!
  • I doubt that you are THAT far off as far as gain. You might be a little ahead of the curve. Have you plugged your height and weight into a calculator at all?

Check this one out: https://i51.tinypic.com/2d9z61w.jpg, it will give you a range. If you concerned, consider talking to a nutritionist/dietician about how to keep it in the normal range. Gaining weight has been really tough on me too, but remember that you have to do what is best for the baby.

this. exactly. only I'm 18 months pp and have gone well below my prepreg weight and now am right back where I started - both with my weight and with my exercise.  a word of warning though: I plateaued for a while at 20 lbs. lost and 20 to go... it was frustrating. but eventually it came off. just be patient with your body and keep eating healthfully and getting some exercise.  you'll be fine!

  • Don't worry...easier said than done right? I gained the same as you at the same point. Every time I went to the doctor I couldn't believe the rate I was gaining so early. However the rapid gain only happened for me during the 2nd Trimester. 3rd Trimester rolled around and I only gained a pound every few weeks. Total I gained 35lbs and now have lost all but 10lbs.

Regardless of healthy diet and exercise throughout the entire pregnancy, I would say the body will gain what it needs to gain. I had no cravings and did not over indulge in anything. But I feel like my recovery has been better than anticipated and my body feels the same as it did before pregnancy.

  • I am a recovering anorexic. i've been in recovery for 5 years but ive been dealing with the ed for as long as i can remember.  I'd restored my weight and kept it on for 2 years prior to becoming pregnant to ensure that i'd be healthy, but it's really really really difficult.  every day.  if i were you i would stop looking at the scale.  major in my chart is the note that i am weighed blind and don't want to discuss my weight unless it becomes medically relevant, ie, too much (not according to me, but too much medically) or too little.  it's helped me SO MUCH to weigh in this way.  the truth is it doesn't matter.  im trying to eat healthy, exercise moderately, and just let LO grow.  hang in there, it's hard.
