PSA: Carbon monoxide detectors

I know all of you ladies are smart, so you probably all have these already.

I just wanted to say what a lifesaver these things are and how important it is that everyone has one of these.

On Saturday we were awoken to ours going off. We borrowed a second one that plugs in the wall from my MIL to double check and it went off in the basement and the main level of our home. We had to leave and it turns out there was a crack in the furnace and it had to be replaced. We stayed with my MIL for the remainder of the weekend since the furnace had to be shut off and it's freeezing in our house. Yesterday we had a new furnace put in and thought everything was fine. At 8pm the detector started going off again! This time DH put it in sleep mode to see if it would go off again. Depending on the levels of carbon monoxide it will start going off at different time intervals. It went off again 4 minutes later, which signals there are dangerously high levels being detected. One of our dogs had also started vomitting and we knew we had to get out of there immediately. We went to stay at my FIL's last night and now I'm waiting for the guy who installed the furnace to come back out.

This little piece of technology has saved my family twice in a matter of 3 days. Thankfully we never got sick and our dog was fine after we removed her from the house. Without the detector though, I don't know if I would be sitting here typing this.

So I urge you all, if you don't have one of these already, please, please get one. It could save you and your family's life one day.

Re: PSA: Carbon monoxide detectors

  • That is a great PSA! We recently had a paramedic leave the generator running on the ambulance and 3 people in the EMS station were killed. They were found by the oncoming shift in the morning.

ETA: Glad you guys are ok!

How tragic! There was recently a father and daughter found dead in their home and they had a generator running in their basement.

    That's just awful!!!!!

We don't have any, so this is definitely a good reason to get some.  Thanks for the PSA.

  • That is so scary. I'm glad you guys are ok. Thanks for the reminder to change our batteries!
  • I agree 100%!!!  We had a similar situation happen when I was 8 months PG (extra scary!)  We also had to get a new furnace.

So glad it turned out OK for you too :)

  • How scary!  I've been asking Brett to check if our smoke detectors are carbon monoxide detectors as well.  Now I'm REALLY going to get on him to get on a ladder and check.

  • A few years ago a classmate of Dh's and his daughter where killed from running a generator in the garage. We've had one ever since. It's such a silly thing not to have. Glad you guys are ok!
