Most photographers will not give these to you because whether they want to admit it or not, they make most of their money from when you order prints, photobooks, etc.
In my experience it is very rare to find a really good photographer who will give you the files for free or right away. Our wedding photographer gave us the prints for free but made us wait a year before getting the files.
Re: Re: getting the digital photo files
that's insane.
I get all mine for no added cost. Just the sitting fee.
Well... I did get married 5 years ago- much could've changed. And maybe some photographers just build more cost into their shooting fees to offset giving away the files for free.
I just know that my husband is trying to break into the prof. photography world and this is what he is discovering from the forums that he is a part of.
In my area all if the top photographers have a digital file only option. Their fees are a bit more but they recognize a market for savvy people that want rights to the prints. They charge extra for enhancements to the digital files.
excuse me. what does this mean?
I am envisioning them in Lightroom clicking a filter and going - KaChing, KaChing
haha yeah. like the CD is non-editing photos. "oops. sorry!! you wanted edited?? ooooh that costs more"
Ding ding ding. We have a winner. That's exactly what it means. The images are usually copies of raw images flattened into jpegs.
you put your kids picture on the internet dude. every contract will give the photographer ownership rights.
and she does have your input and say bc you have a contract that you (general you) likely signed.
Photoshop type changes/enhancement to the raw file like adding color to a a portion of the b&w image. Color correction, making the image look like an oil painting that kind of stuff is an extra fee.
lol i know what it *means*, but rather who the hell would actually pay for that. and along those lines -- what kind of photog just snaps photos (uh esp RAW ones) and then put them on a disc to show someone.
We have yet to get our own pro pics done because the photographer I want to use is due any day now with triplets. However, when she is back to taking pics we will have her do some for us. She charges $150 for a 60 min session, 2-3 hours of editiing and she gives you the enhanced images on a cd.
I would only go to a photographer who gives you the images on a cd.
If I were a photographer I wouldn't want my raw files floating around out there. Wouldn't you want the best representation of what you do out there??
LOL im dying here. DYING. why would ANYONE pay for that extra? stupid people.
All the photographers I've worked with offer a digital images packages (all the edited images) that you can buy right away. It costs a lot, but they do know that's what a lot of people want now. When we got married in 2003, we had the right to buy the images but had to wait 2 years before he'd release them.
I know that, and you know that. I'm just saying a lot of people get the false impression that when they pay for a disc of images, that they now own those images, when in fact they don't.
they also cannot edit them how they want to. you cannot take a photo someone else took and turn in b&w.
but bc of the internet, facebook, boards.... people find out LOL and photogs get mad.
Photogs in my area will usually sell the CD of the images for an additional cost (on top of the sitting/shooting fees.) Usually anywhere from $500-$1000+ just for the digital files.
PS- My wedding photographer made me wait a year for the digital files as well, but that was over 4 years ago. She gave me my wedding album and all the photo prints right away, however.
