3rd Trimester

If you had spotting/bleeding in your pregnancy (and were fine)... please come in

Hi,

Just visiting from first trimester and had a question... I'm 12 weeks and have been bleeding lightly for the last week and a half.  I've been to the doctor 3 times for ultrasounds, and each time the baby has been fine and my doctor has been unable to find the source of the bleed.

My questions are - has anyone experienced anything like this (either this pregnancy or a previous one), when did it start, and how long did it last?  Any words of advice or anything I should ask my doctor?

 Thanks!

  • I had bleeding in all three pregnancies starting in the first trimester.  The first Tri bleeding was all unexplained for me. With DS1, I went on to have partial placenta previa, with DS2, no source was found, and he was delivered at 37 weeks. With DD, I had a chronic abruption and she was delivered around 33 weeks. So, it is possible to carry a pregnancy successfully with bleeding! I did it three times!

  • I spotted for most of my 1st trimester with DD1.  They did end up finding the source - it healed on its own.  DD is now a beautiful 12 month old.  It is not easy to stay calm when spotting, Lord knows I freaked out each time.  Just take comfort in the positive check ups and never hesitate to call your ob if you are worried.

  • i had a spotting scare at like 7-8 weeks. i spotted one day and had a clot another. it turned out that i have a fibroid that caused it.

poor sarahtx has had bleeding her whole preganancy so maybe she will pop in and give you some good advice.

try not to worry. easier said than done i know but the stress will only make it worse.

GL and ill say a prayer for you that things get better!

  • I bled with dd1, if I remember correctly it started around 7 or 8 weeks and went on for about 2 or 3 weeks. It was hard to keep my sanity but obviously things turned out just fine for us.
  • I had some bleeding at 21 weeks. It went away on its own and the doc never found a cause for it. He thinks it might have just been a blood vessel that ruptured on my cervix.

  • I had bleeding around 6w and they couldn't find anything that would be causing it. My OB told me the most likely cause was implantation bleeding from the placenta forming and attaching to the uterine wall. She said this could cause bleeding into early 2nd trimester until the placenta is fully formed.

  • yup. I have been bleeding/spotting my ENTIRE pregnancy. There hasn't really been a day (other than since being put on bedrest last monday), that I havent spotted something.

They could never find a cause either. However last week I started bleeding heavily, like a period. I was admitted to the hospital for 4 days and diagnosed with a placental abruption. They cannot see it on the ultrasound but the doctor told me that only 25% of them actually show up on ultrasound. They diagnose them mostly on symptoms.  I do feel a bit better having a reason for the bleeding because I was going crazy.

My doctor told me that since I have been bleeding the whole pregnancy that is seems to only be getting worse they are monitoring me more closely than someone who say, only had one bleed.

While I don't wish this on you, I can tell you, having a presumable cause is somewhat comforting.

Trust me I have googled everything and was so frustrated and felt like my doctors were checking well enough. But Sometimes, there just is no cause.

Best of luck to you and I hope it stops soon!

Mine has stopped completely which makes bedrest really hard because I have no symptoms anymore! But I know if I were to get up and resume my normal life again, it could start up.  So my advice to you is take it as easy as possible. If your bleeding decreases when you rest, then rest.

    big hugs!!!

  • I had spotting/light bleeding in the frist tri for about a week... maybe a week and a half.  U/S showed that the baby was fine.  The RE and I assumed it was caused by an internal U/S and/or intercourse.
2nd ectopic resulted in loss of tube. HSG revealed remaining tube is "severely torqued".

  • I had bleeding from about week 6 until week 10. At one point it was a huge amount of bleeding. Due to two previous losses, they watched it really closely and didn't see anything for a little while. Finally, they did another ultrasound and found a subchorionic hematoma. It isn't dangerous unless it is very large and surrounds the baby. I just had to rest more than usual. No walking (for exercise), no running, etc. I am now 32 weeks and baby is fine!
  • I started spotting at 17 weeks and was freaked out. They found the source-a blood clot on my placenta. It was 'old blood' and may have been there since the placenta formed. I had to be checked again to make sure the clot did not increase in size, and thankfully it did not.

Within 3 weeks, the bleeding resolved itself and the clot went away on its own.

  • I had bleeding with this pregnancy. I bleed from about 6 weeks until 12 weeks off and on. Clots at one point, varying degrees of flow. They couldn't find a reason for my spotting, but put me on bedrest for a week. I had a sonogram done and it all looked fine. Ever since the bleeding stopped little man has been doing just fine and progressing like normal. Try not to stress too much, though I know that's easier said than done.

  • I had spotting/bleeding from 6 DPO up until 14 weeks pretty much every day. So far everything is fine.
  • I have had spotting-heavy bleeding throughout my pregnancy starting at about 9 weeks I believe.  Happened every couple weeks, and included 1 ER trip.  They've never been able to find the reason for the bleeding.

  • I also had spotting with this pregnancy from wks 8 to about 12. It was off and on. I had U/S at 11wks and they said it was probablly due to implantaion and/or intercourse, or because of cervix sensetivity. We were advised not to have sex untill after wk. 16 when your cervix should be completely closed. After that I didn't have any more spotting. LO is fine and we are now at 34wks. DH has been scared to have sex pretty much the entire pregnancy but thats a small price to pay. LOL
