Bad reaction to glucose test

I did my glucose test this morning and about 40 minutes after drinking the drink I got really hot, broke out in a cold sweat and got very light headed and dizzy.  It was pretty scary.  I ended up passing the test but only by 1 point. Anyone else have a bad reaction to the test?

  • No, that's weird. Did the Dr say anything about your reaction to the Glucola?  I only got stomach cramps from having to drink the stuff so quickly. Blech.  I have mine tomorrow for this pregnancy - that little orange bottle in my fridge is taunting me.....

  • The nurse just said it could be my body coming off of all the sugar.  I thought that was wierd because I have never heard of anyone else having that reaction to sugar.  I figure 50 grams is about 2 or 3 sodas so its not THAT much.  Thats nice that you get to do yours at home though!  I had to drink it there and just sit in the waiting room for an hour.  I also didnt have a flavor choice, they just gave me the clear one.  Yuck!

My reaction wasn't as bad as yours, but what the nurse said makes sense. My body has never reacted well to sugar which is why I avoid sodas and juice. I felt a little dizzy and sick to my stomach after drinking mine but the dr said it was perfectly normal. I didn't get a choice either, they just gave me whatever was in their little fridge. It wasn't that bad, I just downed it in less than a minute to get it over with.

The EXACT same thing happened to me this morning at my test!! I had to lie down in the ECG room for an hour!!! I wonder if this is an indicator of GD.... it was really freaky!

  • It didn't happen to me, but the lab tech said it happens from time to time so they didn't want me to leave the lobby during the hour to make sure I didn't start driving and then crash or something.

This. My nurse at the 3 hour said that I had to stay in the hospital while they did the test incase of shakiness, nausea, etc. They said it happens to a lot of people.

That happened to me, too, when I took the 1-hour test Monday. I was in an exam room and just paced around until I felt slightly better. I also got very very nauseous (and this all hit about 30 mins into the test - drinking the Glucola didn't bother me at all.)

I haven't heard back on my results yet, though.

  • I didn't with the one hour, but with the 3 hour, you have to drink 100 glucose instead of 50 and sit for 3 hours instead of one.  I had to fast before it and I started getting pretty shaky and had a bad headache, but the lab lady said that was pretty normal.  What did your doctor say about your reaction?

  • I just did mine yesterday (waiting for the results today!) and it made me really wired, then I crashed hard and then I had a headache.

I'm really hoping not to have to do the 3 hour test....

  • I had the same reaction and nearly passed out at the doctor's office. I eat a pretty low sugar/low carb diet and have for many years so my body wasn't quite sure how to handle the sudden rush of sugar. Any the results came back that I am borderline hypoglycemic. HTH

  • I felt super sick to my stomach even after leaving the hospital! I drank a ton of water when I got home to get the 'feel' of it gone. It grosses me out to think of the amount of sugar in that stuff. I think that stuff might be a little too drastic of an amount, I have NEVER eaten that much sugar that I get sick to my stomach!

  • I hated that test.  The stuff was gross, but the way I felt was awful.  I didn't pass out, but I felt shaky inside, and when I was sitting waiting in the waiting room, I couldn't even focus enough to read.  I just sat there in a daze with my head in my hands. I asked to lay down to have my blood taken cause I was afraid of passing out.  I guess I passed cause it's been a week and I haven't heard from them.  I am typically hypoglycemic, but I have no idea during pregnancy. I'm definitely interested to hear my results.

  • After the 1 hour, I felt ok just kind of tired (failed it).  But I took the 3 hour today, and came very close to throwing up twice.  I had to run to the bathroom and distract and breathe myself out of it.  If I threw up, I was told I'd have to go back another day and repeat the test....no thank you!  I was somehow able to keep it down.  The tech also told me nausea/not feeling well is common.
  • I had a very similar reaction with my first DS to the point that I even threw up and had to retake the test a couple days later.  The second try I was told to sip it over 15 mins and then they had me lay down in the room where they would be drawing blood and start the hour.  I passed with flying colors.  I am hypoglycemic.  I don't think they even gave me the test with DS2 or if they did I didn't have any reaction that made it memorable.  I hope this time will be painless cause I would not want to go through that experience again.

    GL for awesome test results

  • at my 3hr test I got really nauseus and light headed as well with the cold sweats. I had to sit in the bathroom for a minute in case I got sick. It did pass and I was able to complete the test and I passed.

  • yeah I got really dizzy and lightheaded too. Lol I thought I was going to pass out in the lab! I passed the test, they didn't say by how much. They just said that everyone reacts differently to it and not to worry
