I finally got around to reading Ferber and he made a lot of sense. I was very reluctant to use it but DS sleeps about 20 min at a time and we're exhausted and ready to try anything. I didn't realize he was overnapping so we're going to try that tomorrow.
1) When you started did you just do the method at night or at naps as well? Did you start first thing in the morning or at bedtime?
2) If you child is paci dependent do you use it all day and just eliminate it at night or eliminate it 100%? DS is paci dependent from the NICU and it really helps with the reflux, the GI doc said the act of sucking creates pressure to help keeps the food down.
Re: Ferber questions (not the usual ones)
1) I started with night time sleeping only because DS naps fine. I highly recommend a routine at night time...we were only doing baths every other night, but now that we are Ferbering we do every night and it makes a huge difference. We bathe, and then change, book and feed in the room with the lights off (just hall light on).
2) DS wasn't really attached to the paci, he would occasionally use it but we eliminated it at nightime to make it easier on us. He doesn't really use it much during the day anymore either. Ferber mentions that if you have multiple things to work on (like paci and sleeping on their own) the you can do both at the same time or one then the other a few weeks/months, later. If I were you I'd try keeping the paci in at first if you think it will help with your LOs reflux...you don't want to make him uncomfortable and trying to learn how to self-soothe, you know? At least that's my opinion.
Goodluck, Ferber gave me back my sanity, I never would have thought it would work so well! FWIW, it took us 6 nights and DS was sleeping 11hrs a night!
1. Just night time- my mother watches him mon-fri and I told her she could try if she wanted and apparently it was an epic failure, so we're letting the naps go for now. He usually falls asleep at the bottle and then you can set him in the crib at nap time (or he'll nap in the car when we're doing an outting)
2. We have kept the paci so far but may be taking it away soon.
Ferber was working great for us all last week but this week he has a cold and it seems that everything has gone out the window- I know we'll get back on track but I feel like last week was a waste now! ugh

We did nights first and once that worked we moved on to naps. It took about 2 weeks before we did naps and another 4 days (ish) to get all the naps to where he would be able to fall asleep on his own. We still have the occasional nap when he fusses/cries for a few minutes, but it's rare.

We eliminated it all together. That being said, DS wasn't too into the paci once we moved to the 3-6 month soothie, so it wasn't difficult. If you aren't ready to eliminate the paci 100%, try just eliminating it for sleep maybe... hopefully that'll remove the association between sleep & the paci.
1. We did bedtime first. With DS it took 3 nights and he was putting himself to sleep. So they next day we did naptime and he knew what to do. No crying needed.
2. No advice on the paci, sorry.
