2nd Trimester

8 lbs in five weeks....GAH!

I had an appointment yesterday afternoon and the damned scale said I gained 8 pounds!!!! Are you effin kidding me! i wanted to scream my head off, and cry my eyes out. I know you gain weight when you are pregnant, I'm not opposed to that. With my DS I gained almost 60 lbs. And I really don't want a repeat of that. It was a b!tch to get off. I sure did it, but I hated every single minute of it.

Since my first I have promised myself that my second pregnancy I will take way better care of myself. I was definitly a bit careless with not working out and not eating the greatest the first time around.

When I found out I was pregant with #2 I was training for a half marathon. I started spotting at 7 weeks so I was put on pelvic rest. Which ment no half and no strenuous excersise.... I was released from pelvic rest at 13 weeks and it feels great to be back in the gym. I haven't changed my eating habits a whole lot and don't eat a ton of fatty foods. I am going to take a strong look at my diet and what I can fix to be even more healthy.   SO- I'm super frusterated with the 8 lb weight gain. My doc is testing my thyroid to see if there are any issues there.

I'm not sure what i'm looking for with reguard to responses. But anyone who's gone through excessive weight gain with their fisrt, what are you doing to manage it this time around?  Thanks in Advance. :)

Re: 8 lbs in five weeks....GAH!

  • I gained about 50 with ds. I gained a lot in 1st tri with him. This time around I was so sick in first tri I only gained a pound in 12 weeks. From 12-16 weeks I gained 5 - got my appetite back! Honestly, I'm trying to do better this time around but I'm not going to let myself freak out about it. I will have to work hard to get it off once the baby is here, but right now, I have other priorities, ykwim? I try to eat the right things, get a little exercise here and there, other than that, what can you really do?

  • I agree Gina.  I guess I kinda see pregnancy as a slippery slope reguarding my mother and gma.  They were both pretty small prior to babies, and they are both overweight now. It just scares me but I know it's all worth it.

Same here - but my mother didn't make the right choices post-pregnancy and still doesn't (regarding eating and exercise). Genetics are hard to fight, but if you lost the baby weight once, you can do it again!

  • This is my first, so I can't tell you what I've done differently, but I gained 10 of my 12 lbs during my first trimester.  I think you're only supposed to gain 3-5 or something like that in first tri, so I panicked and I've been watching my weight ever since.  I helps me to write down everything I eat, because I noticed that in first tri I was eating whatever I wanted whenever I wanted, even though I didn't really feel like I was eating more, once I wrote it down, I was like, wow!  I've been a lot more careful during the second trimester and have been working out 45 minutes to an hour a day (which is supposed to help reduce the length of your labor, as well, according to my OB).  I don't do anything strenuous, but I go for walks or work out on my elliptical.  Like I said, I've only gained 2 lbs in the last 12 weeks.  I have been on a low carb diet for the last 6 weeks or so because of gestational diabetes, so I think that has helped, too.  If you're really worried, you might want to try something like that.  Good luck!

  • Yeah I just had my 24 week appt. yesterday and I also gained 8 pounds, but in 4 weeks.  I gained about 45 with my first son, who turned out to be 10 pounds 2 ounces (no diabetes).  Lost all the weight, got pregnant again, and now it looks like I'm gaining at the same pace, but with a "normal" sized baby so far.  I think I am actually eating less junk this time, and have cut out a lot of the juice I drank the first time.  I'm still working out, so I don't know how to account for the weight gain.  I eat an occasional cookie or ring ding or whatever, but I'm eating way less junk food than I did pre-pregnancy and I never had any weight gain issues then.
