HI Hawaii Mommas-
Hope everyone is well and enjoying their little ones!
So question for the cloth diapering Mommas-my best friend is having a baby and would like to use cloth diapers but doesn't know best ones or how many to buy-any recommendations? TIA
Re: question for the mommas who are cloth diapering!
It's SUCH a personal preference as to which kind. I would recommend taking a cloth diapering class, if at all possible. That's where I learned about the different kinds and got to touch them and hear the benefits and disadvantages to each kind.
With that said, I LOVE our FuzziBunz! They totally rock, and are super easy to use. With that kind (a pocket diaper), I would recommend between 18-24 diapers for full-time cloth diapering, with washing them every 2-3 days. But you can get away with less if she will wash more often, only do it part-time, or also depending on the baby and how much they go (which she wouldn't know until later).
HTH!
Hey Alix! Nice to "see" you! She might consider doing a diaper trial...for more info, check out my blog post about it:

We've kept it simple and just use unbleached cotton prefolds and Thirsties Duo covers...we have 3 dozen Ozo Cosy Prefolds (we got them in infant and premium sizes) and 6 covers...easy peasy and economical. We have four Thirsties Duo Diapers which are pocket diapers, which we use with an added hemp insert for overnight...no leaks ever! I've tried others (Bum Genius, Fuzzi Bunz, etc.) and always come back to my trusty Thirsties. I got a regular kitchen trash bin with a lid and line it with one of two WHAMIES diaper pail liners that we rotate on wash days. I got 48 organic bamboo jersey wipes from Etsy seller Wooldins and we "cigar roll" them, wet them and keep them in a Lionsheart Wipes Warmer. We used Snappi fastners in the beginning, but don't anymore. We wash diapers every other day and we're good to go...here's my blog posts about our system:

MrsPresley knows A LOT about CDs, so hopefully she'll chime in too!

Ditto about it being a personal preference. If they're wanting to CD to save money, prefolds are definitely the way to go.
Also, I bought several FuzziBunz and ALWAYS had leak problems so I don't use them anymore. I might give them a try again now that she's bigger but for us they leaked every.single.time. Robbi mentioned they had leak problems, too. I think it may just be a fit issue but I'm not too sure.
Anyhow, we use prefolds with a Snappi and Thirsties and Blueberry covers. I also had a couple Bummis covers but she outgrew them and I decided to stick with Thirsties and Blueberry ones. For nighttime I use BumGenius 3.0 with an extra hemp insert (JoeyBunz). We've never had a leak with them.
I bought most of my stuff on abbyslane. They have great customer service and free shipping in the US.
We use prefolds (24), snappis and Thirsties covers (3 for each size). I also have 12 Bum Genius 3.0 pockets which I love. Now that A's on the move, I really prefer those to the prefolds, especially since they have extra inserts to keep babies dry. We use those primarily at night, though. We do laundry every 4-5 days or so.
CDing has been a little more challenging after 6 months (when we introduced solids), but there are still ways to make it worth the while -- I put him in sposies for his first diaper of the day, when he routinely poops, and use disposable towel inserts the rest of the time, just in case.
When I was preggo with K, I went to Moonsprout in Hilo and spoke to the owner, who educated me on CDs. I was able to feel and see the various types of diapers they had in store. I liked the FuzziBunz One Size for it's simplicity and the fact that I could use it until K was potty trained.
I ordered 2 dozen from Amazon and picked up about 5 from Moonsprout. I also ordered 3 BumGenuis 3.0s on a recommendation from a friend. I have to say that I don't like the BGs only because of the velcro - it's already starting to fray and it pokes K in the thighs.
I haven't had many leaks with FB or BG, but I tend to put K on a "quick dry" cloth anyway, just in case. We do laundry every day - but that's just because I like to have all clean sets in the morning (plus, K pees a lot!)
IMO, Bum Genius! So so so easy and no leaks! They are a little expensive. I bought all of ours on sales though so it helped a little. www.cottonbabies.com
We also had leaks with the Fuzzi Bunz One Size Diaper. I bought my stuff from Cottonbabies.com, momsmilkboutique.com and etsy.com. I found good information on those sites as well as Green Mountain Diapers, Diaperswappers.com and pinstripesandpolkadots.com
It feels overwhelming to research it, but once you take the plunge, get the gear and start CDing, it's SO easy!
