How much did your 9 month old weigh?

I have a 9 month old baby girl. She is 27 1/2 inches long and olny weighs 15 pounds. The pedo dr. Says she needs to weigh more and we should feed her BUTTER. Have you ever heard of this before? I don't think she looks skinny. She has chunky cheeks and chunky thighs. I think she is just petite. Would you feed your baby butter? I have to take her back in a month for a weight check. If she is gaining weight we have to go to a specialist. I am concerned and would love to hear waht you have to say and suggestions.

Butter!?!  That doesn't sound right.  To add weight, I would give her full fat plain yogurt but not butter.  What is she eating for solids right now?

My DD was 18lbs, 28" at her 9 month appt.  She was in the 44th percentile fo weight I think.  15lbs doesn't seem overly small to me, especially since she is a little shorter than my DD.  What percentile was she?

Babies need fat. I wouldn't feed my baby a spoonful of butter but putting butter on toast pancakes, waffles and like things would help. If you aren't comfortable with butter use olive oil. Try higher fat foods like avocado, yogurt, cheeses, and other similar foods.

I think you need a new doctor.

at 9 months DS weighed 17lbs. He's always been small but he's growing fine according to his own curve. I can't imagine being told to feed him butter, that's just weird.

My DS is a chucker he was 25 lbs at him 9 mo check. But if he was small I absolutely would not feed him butter! There are much better and healtier choices out there. I would suggest mushed or dices avacado, it is calorie rich and has a ton of good fat. My DS didn't like it plain so I would mix it with fruit like applesauce. Plus u can give her cottage cheese, mac and cheese, full fat yogurt and add olive oil to het puress or whatever she is eating a little at a time. But butter that is just crazy. You need to do what u think is right, she is a girl and she is probably just little. I'm sure there is nothing to worry about and the DR is just being overly cautious!

Agreed.  Although I highly doubt the pedi actually told her to feed the kid a spoonful of butter.  Sounds like a case of the dramz to me.

DD is 25 in and 17 lbs 1 oz. I definitely wouldn't go with the butter option but maybe just up her calorie intake. DD was a chunk until she became active then she actually lost a pound at 5 months. She is a grazer and she needs to eat constantly, almost all day. Even if you offer snacks more often that may help.

my dd was 18 pounds and 26.5 inches at her 9 month appt.

DS weighed 18 lbs 5 oz and was 29 inches long at his 9 month visit. Our pediatrician noted the fact that his length-to-weight ration is below the 1 percentile, but she said that since he is growing both in weight and length, that she is not concerned at this time.

I would only be concerned if you DD isn't growing.  If she is consistently gaining weight and height but is simply petite, I wouldn't worry, but if she isn't growing in one or both directions, then perhaps the issue does need attention.

A friend of mine told me that her daughter's pediatrician was concerned about her weight when she was an infant and recommended adding a little bit of olive oil into her purees, and that it did help (she is 3 now and is at a healthy weight).

Thanks for all the replys. The Dr. did say to mix the butter with her food. Butter just doesn't seem healthy to me. I will try olive oil and avocados. they are the healthy fat. She is growing and gaining weight. She is in the 50% percentile for wieght and less than 0 percentile for weight. I breast feed and have recently started supplemsnting with formula because I can't keep up. She eats 3 meals a day and has 2 snacks a day. She is very active chasing her older brother that is almost 2 1/2. She is always crawling after him. I think she is healthy. I think I will see another dr for a 2nd opinion.

We feed butter when butter is called for. I wouldn't just mix it in whatever though.

My son is 9 months tomorrow and is 21pds and 30in as of today.

Has she always been below the 0% for weight?  If she was previously in the 10th% for example, I would be concerned as a parent and would want to see the specialist IMO.  It certainly can't hurt, KWIM?  Our pedi has mentioned that all kids grow at individual rates, but they do want to see that LO is consistently in the same percentile at every appt, and the the height and weight percentiles match up (ie 25th for weight and 25th for height) or are not too far apart.

I can understand why as a Dr he would want to double check with a specialist just to make sure that everything is A-OK with you LO.  I am sure that we would rather do that than find out down the road that she has something more serious going on.

I'm assuming that he is asking you to use full fats, like butter on toast instead of margarine, full fat yogurt, etc, not that he told you to melt several tablespoons of butter and pour it over her dinner. Are you still feeding purees, or are you feeding her what the family is eating?  Babies do need full fats and fatty acids for brain development.  That is why full fat dairy is emphasized for LO's (whole milk rather than 2% when you start milk for example).

At 9 mo check up DD wt 18 lbs and 28 inches with 44 cm head (she lost wt in Oct due to an accident or she would of been 19 lbs.) Though today just 2wks later she already is about 18.5 lbs.

My DD also has her family big cheeks and my thick strong thighs. Yet, she remains thin in the body!

Your DD seems fine though make sure she isn't dipping to much as long as there is growth she should be fine.

    Our daughter was 29 3/4" and 21 1/2 lbs.

I assume you pedi didn't mean for you to feed her straight butter.  You can add butter to her cereal, put it on her toast, etc.  There are other good high fat options (fat being very important for babies unlike adults).  Salmon, avocado, eggs, etc.

DS was 19 pounds 5 ounces & 30 inches long.   However his percentile dropped slightly so ped. told me to feed DS more snacks! I do use butter when preparing food for DS, such as grilled cheese.   I would rather use the real stuff than margarine anyway.

Your LO is in the 0% percentile so it shouldn't be a surprise that you were asked to fatten her up.   Perhaps the ped. didn't deliver the message well but don't focus on that, focus on the message itself.  Your LO is tiny so look into doing something different whether it's adding butter to food or giving her more snacks, etc.

To answer your other question, yes I have heard of pediatricans instructing moms to give their babies butter.    There was a bumpie recently that posted the same thing.   You may be able to locate that thread if you search.

Agreed  and agreed.  DD was 17lbs. 9oz. and 29 inches long.  Her pedi wasn't concerned about her weight because she's been following her own curve.  I mentioned to her how she is starting to refuse purees and wants real solids, but I'm afraid she isn't going to get enough. She said to just make sure the whatever she does eat has a good fat content and high calories...obviously don't feed her a spoonful of butter, but if you are giving waffles or soemthing, put some butter on it, use olive oil for things, avacados.  Babies do need fat and they don't store it they way that adults do.  It gets used up in their development of the brain, nervous system, etc.

My DD weighed 13 pounds 13 oz (less then 3%) and was 26 1/2 inches tall (15%) My pedi didnt have a problem with this becuase she has always been low. at 4 months she was in the 10th % and 6 months the 3rd % but our doctor never eer reccommended adding to her diet becuase she already eats everything she is just super active. If she is super active I wouldnt worry too much about it. its crazy to see how different pedis react differently about this situation.

Fiona was 16lb 8oz and 26 1/2in and Caitlin was 17lb and 27in. The butter advice sounds crazy to me!  My girls eat avocado, YoBaby yogurt (full fat) and cottage cheese as higher fat and calorie options. For us, the Pedi is more concerned with THEIR line on the growth scale, meaning they are gaining weight at a consistent rate and not too concerned about the "average" baby.

Eliza was 14 lbs 9 oz and 26.75 inches long at 9 months.  The doctor was concerned because she has steadily declined from the 30th %ile to the 1st %ile.  We started supplementing formula (breastmilk production has crashed due to this and being pregnant).  The doctor also recommending cooking her food with olive oil which I am really bad about remembering.  The doctor wanted her to drink about 25 oz of milk a day and I have found that DD will just not drink that much.  I feed her about every 3 hours and she only will drink between 2-4 ounces most of the time.  She is still waking up 1-2 times per night and will drink the same amount.  The most she has drank in a day is about 20 oz and that is not totally consistent.

At a weight check at about 10 months, she weighed 15 lbs 4 oz.  We go back the week after Thanksgiving for another weight check.  If she hasn't gained much weight then I will be asking what our next course of action is.
