Preemies

Preemies & Puffers?

My 3 preemies have all been on inhalers at some point in time, in association with a cold/possible asthma.  Anyone else?  Did they outgrow them?  How old?  I dread every little cough, wondering if it's going to lead to wheezing...

Re: Preemies & Puffers?

  • My DD hasn't had to (so far - knock on wood), but I was on a nebulizer from about age 4 through middle school, then had albuterol inhalers a few times a day until the end of high school, when Advair was invented. Then I was on that 2xday and rarely needed my rescue inhaler until I got pg w/DD, which made things 100x better and I haven't needed my inhalers since. From the perspective of an adult, I wish I had had it better controlled as a child. I could never really run and play like the other kids - I'd be good in short bursts, but then I'd need to go to the nurse for my inhaler. If your kids get to a point where they are using their inhalers once or more a day, I'd start looking into something like Advair, that drug changed my life and I wish it was around when I was a kid. As for getting sick, it pretty much just became routine that if I got a cold, it would eventually move to my lungs and we'd have to do a round of steroids. It was all I ever knew, so it wasn't that bad.
