Question for exclusive pumpers!

Did you take your pump to the hospital when you delivered? I know your supply doesn't come in for a few days and pumping colostrum isn't easy so did you supplement with formula in the beginning?? I plan on exclusively pumping but was a little curious on what to do in the beginning. Thanks for you advice!! :)

Re: Question for exclusive pumpers!

  • Colostrumplays a very important role in the baby's gastrointestinal tract. A newborn'sintestines are very sensitive, and are permeable. Colostrum "coats"the gastrointestinal tract with a barrier, which mostly prevents foreignsubstances from penetrating, and possibly sensitizing a baby to foods themother has eaten. I don?t know what your reason for EP is but atleast give your baby the first week of colostrum, then your  milk will be more established and it can make pumping easier.

  • I used the hospital grade pump and was able to get out colostrum.  I did supplement with formula, but only because I didn't understand how little colostrum he needed.

  • Hi There,

You shouldn't need to bring your pump to the hospital...if you need to pump the hospital has machines available for you to use.  I actually ended up renting my pump from the hospital...worth every penny!

    Good luck!

This is exactly what I was concerned about. I know the amount of colostrum that cones in is very small. But if that is all he needs I shouldn't need formula.

  • I would contact the hospital where you plan on delivering to see if they provide pumps for the moms. I didn't bring squat when I delivered DS and they let me use a Medela Symphony to help bring my supply in. (Couldn't get DS to latch, had to draw out my very inverted nipples plus help with my supply)

DS #1 born January 2010. DS #2 due June 2014.

  • If you can, the best thing to do at first is nurse, nurse like crazy. It will help your milk come in quicker and then I would switch to pumping. I nursed at first and my milk came in at the hospital and then switched to pumping and occasionally nursing and have never had supply issues or anything.

This.  LO did a great job of bringing my milk in at the hospital and I started pumping when I was at home (he had latch issues after my milk came in).  I think it was good that I didn't see how little colostrum he was getting because it probably would have made me want to supplement.

Maybe I'm not the norm for EPers, but I pumped every 2-3 hours around the clock and my milk was in 44 hours later.   OP- definitely don't get discouraged about the amount of colostrum you see.  Your baby's stomach will only be the size of a marble.

  • DS's latch was awful, coupled with inverted nipples, I had to pump every 2 hours with the pump at the hospital.  My milk didn't come in until Day 5.  I did need to supplement after 30 hours, due to DS leaning towards becoming jaundice.  I still pump and ff(two feedings, sometimes just to top him off). He nurses on occasion, but doesn't always latch. I'm actually renting a hospital pump as we speak, but will probably buy a pump when  I return it at the end of November.
