Putting LO to bed

I read that you're supposed to put LO down when they are drowsy and not completely knocked out.  But when i put my DD (10 weeks) down for a nap or bed her eyes pop wide open.  And then she gets super cranky after awhile.

Any thoughts?  She was born 3 weeks early so I was wondering if this had anything to do with it.  Maybe she's not mature enough yet to be put down drowsy?

Re: Putting LO to bed

  • Mine does the same thing.  I know it's not ideal but I nurse her right before bed & when she falls asleep, I then gently put her in the rock & play for the night.  I also swaddle her before the last feeding. I find if she's not swaddled she wakes right back up.  I don't do it during the day & I cannot put her down for a nap or she will wake right up.  I suppose I need to start swaddling for naps so I can actually get something done during the day.  It's frustrating when they are so tired & fight sleep.

  • Have you tried putting her down wide awake instead of drowsy? We put LO down in his crib with a dry diaper, full belly, and give him his pacifier, he is almost always asleep within 15 mins....30 mins if he is a little fussy. We used to rock him to sleep or put him down drowsy and he would always wake up when we set him down. Letting him fall asleep on his own has worked much better.
  • Here's a post I wrote when DD was 3 months old:

    Key things:

    - awake time

    - escape proof swaddle

    - put to bed totally awake not drowsy

  • Going down drowsy works for us now at bedtime, but it took some work. I'd stand over him in the crib and rub his chest so if he woke up he could see me and would doze back off. Now he goes down easily

Naps are different though, he won't go down for a nap drowsy, we're still rocking him to sleep during the day

  • Thank you! I'll try the different methods b/c the drowsy bit isn't working for us.
