DS OMNICEF REACTION-URGENT

*Disclaimer*

I've already called my DR, and DH is picking up DS. I'm looking for experiences.

Daycare called and said DS has blood in his stool. He's on day 4 of Omnicef. Has your child had a reaction like this to Omnicef? They want us to take DS to the ER, not Urgent Care. We are 90% positive it's NOT blood, but a reaction to the antibiotic.

Has anyone's DC had a reaction to Omicef? Did they put them on another anitbiotic? I'm concerned that he could get c. diff, an infection.

UG. This is the FIFTH antibiotic he's had for the ear infection and he's only 7 months old!!!!

Re: DS OMNICEF REACTION-URGENT

  • Is daycare SURE it's blood?  Omnicef can cause rust colored stools.  DD#1 had rust colored stools for many days after she was finished with the antibiotic.

  • it makes poop red.
  • The first time my DR RX omniceft he warned me his poop would be reddish and not to be alarmed- he was right.  DS always has that reaction to omniceft, I was under the impression it was a fairly common side effect.  I hope your DS is ok and feeling better soon.
  • Omnicef turns poop red.  The pharmacist should have told you that when you picked up the script.

It's NOT a reaction.  It's simply a NORMAL side effect of the antibiotic.

  • I agree with everyone else. The poop can turn a redish dark color. Why is the Dr. saying to go to the ER right away?

  • Ditto, ditto, ditto everyone else. Totally normal while on Omnicef.

  • Because it *could* be blood. my concern is the c. diff infection that can result. I know that DR are always CYA. I'm still at work. DH is taking him to Urgent Care as a precaution. My DR wanted us to take him to a Children's Hospital instead of UC, but I think that's an overreaction.

Just curious, why would you not take him to the hosp if your dr. recommended it?  Esp if there is a Children's nearby

Hope he is doing well, and you get some answers.

  • I repeat, this is VERY NORMAL.  There is no need to put your child through the battery of tests that they are going to do at the ER.  Actually, they're not likely to do any of that.  They're going to hear that he's on Omnicef and send you on your way.

I'm very surprised at a daycare center reacting that way.  They should be familiar with antibiotics and their reactions in children, especially since this is a very common one.

  • Called the on-call Peds DR. She said it is a totally normal side effect, continue with the meds. Now to come down off this and actually work, and I have a raging head cold. Tongue Tied

I would have panicked too!  I mean, if the pharmacist or doctor doesn't explicitly tell you its a side effect, and the daycare calls saying "BLOOD IN THE STOOL!!!" it sends you into panic mode!

    phew!

    Good thing its nothing!

    This!

Except my pharmacist didn't tell me either.   This is what I was told AFTER the doc made me collect stool samples!

  • Calm down hon, if you can!!!! Omnicef makes poop brick red!!!!!!
  • I'm late to this, but yeah, last year when Cohen has RSV (and a suspected ear infection) they sent us home from a week at the hospital.  They were giving him Omnicef while there, but the red stools didn't show up until about 4 hours after we were home.  Of course, it was 7 pm by this time, so we rushed him to the after hours clinic because there was nobody to talk to at the hospital.

I was so FURIOUS that they (the hospital and the pharmacy) did not tell us about this.  Seriously, I had no idea and after dh left to take him to the clinic, I found that info in the sheet that came with the meds, but when your son was in the hospital for a week and then you think you see a bloody stool, you freak out a little.

So, after that long story, don't feel bad.  This has happened to me, too.
