Babies: 9 - 12 Months

question on costs during the first year (have insurance)

How much did you have pay out of pocket if you had insurance for drs appts, delivery and postnatal checkups in the first year? We're trying to pick our new insurance plan now that we found out we're expecting.

Thanks :)

Re: question on costs during the first year (have insurance)

  • we had a $700 copay for me for delivery, DS had to stayin the nicu/hospital for a bit and we had a $350 copay for that.  each office visit was $20 (we had probably 8-10, all but 1 were routine well child visits).  then we had 1 ER visit for an allergic reaction which cost $500 (our deductible).

  • We paid nothing for delivery. Have a $10 copay and have been to the Dr. more than normal because DS has been referred to a number of specialists and see's a GI on a monthly basis so I would say we have spend at least $250 if not more...if I just added well visits it would be $60. Plus 2 ER visits at $50 each.

  • During L&D (late December), we were on a no deductible HMO so $300 per hospital day, maximum of $1000 I think.  January 1st we were forced into a PPO that is more expensive and has a deductible, but routine well baby visits/vaccinations are at no charge, so we pay $0 for these.

We've had about $1300 of non-insurance paid medical expenses for DS this year.  He had reflux so there were 2-3 extra doctor visits plus a visit to our local children's hospital to check for pyloric stenosis.  He is also on his third DOC band cranial remolding helmet...our copay/coinsurance is included in that $1300 for the first two helmets.  Our third helmet was denied and we paid an additional $2200 out of pocket.

  • For delivery and regular check ups $0. DS needed a surgery and we paid $60 for the surgery, and another $40 for co pays (initial visits from a pediatric surgeon and then second opinion). I really love my insurance.

  • I paid 700 to my obgyn and then we paid about 1500 for the hospital for me and Emmie.
  • We have a high deductible health plan that does not cover non-preventative health costs until we reach the deductible (was $4500 in 2009).  Basically, when we found out we were pregnant, we were out of pocket $4500.

This year, I've taken DS2 to the doctor twice for non-preventative care.  Both office visits were around $85.  He was given a prescription yesterday for amoxicillin and it was under $5 for the whole thing.  All of his well baby visits and vaccinations are covered at 100% because they are considered preventative.

This was basically us too. Both DH and I worked for small companies who had switched to high deductible plans. We looked into private insurance, but I had some pre-existing conditions and the cost was pretty outrageous. We would have paid $0 had I gone on state insurance. I am surprised that you can find an insurance company to accept you while you are already pregnant.
  • We have 90/10 insurance so we were responsible for 10% of all bills. We paid $2,700 for my pregnancy, prenatal/postnatal care and delivery. First year costs for baby have been $20 co-pays at 2, 4, 6, 9 and 12  months. This does not include the random appointments here and there for sick baby vists and prescriptions.

Disclaimer: I had pregnancy complications though. If I had had a normal pregnancy my total OOP for pre/postnatal care and delivery would have been about $900.

  • We've paid $0 for the delivery and well baby checkups.  Only co-pay I had to pay was one-time for me, and then all other prenatal were free, and once for DS to have a specialist look at his toenails (they were born ingrown).  I <3 my insurance plan!  I got to stay an extra day recovery at no charge as well after the delivery.  DH is a teacher and his union got us a kick *ss plan.

  • I pay $5000/year for medical deductions from my paycheck, but I also don't pay a penny deductable.  I have a $20 copay for Dr. appts and prescriptions, but didn't pay a dime of my $17k c-section.  After we have DD #2 I may change to a lower plan that has a $1-2k deductable and a lower payroll deduction.
