Mind to share your table food (veggie) experience?

Just curious ... I need to branch out more and not be afraid to try new things with DS.  With purees he ate any thatI gave him.  I am slowly converting over from pureed baby food (whether smooth or w/pieces) to "table food" - but sometimes I get scared and think he might choke.  I want to boil/steam some veggies and give them to him in small bits to chomp on.  He loves small bits of boiled chicken, noodles, scrambled eggs - but for veggies I am still doing purees.  Share with me your experience with giving your LO small bits of veggies - what did you start with or have better luck with ?  I am thinking potato, green beans, carrots, broccoli, corn.. .  Please share what you've tried and what success or failure you've experienced.  TIA

  • Landon loves broccoli, green beans, carrots, pretty much anything we put in front of him. We make sure it is soft enough for him, but solid enough to pick up. He loves it, but he ALWAYS makes a mess!

  • I buy frozen veggies & steam or boil them.  I just cook a bit longer than I normally would.  They have peas & diced carrots & Emmie loves those b/c they are already bite size for her.  If I cook fresh veggies, I normally just steam them as well.  I love fresh veggies but they normally go bad by the time I cook them so I usually just buy frozen.

Although frozen green beans seem to be a bit tough for her so, I ususally do pureed green beans still

  • We've done little chunks of roasted sweet potato for DD.  They were easy for her to pick up, and mushy enough for her to chew (with just 2 bottom teeth).  The only bad thing were the pieces that had a lot of skin on them, she usually couldn't break that up.  So I'd wait until she was done with the potato part and then reach in and pull out the skin.  Guess I'll just peel them next time.

  • We have been doing table foods since almost the very beginning of solid foods and I was a bit nervous at first also. I read up on Baby Led Weaning/Solids and found that it's really not that bad, you just kind of have to jump in with both feet.

Start with large slices or pieces that baby can hold onto well and still get in his mouth.  Baby will gum/gnaw on the piece of food and may work a bite or two off.  Elijah is very independent and loves to feed himself.  Good luck!
