Pressure to exercise from DH

So my DH has been on me about exercising more. He?s worried my heart won?t be ?strong enough? for delivery. He?s kinda an exercise freak. I?ve been lagging quite a bit in the past month or two since the weather has changed (I used to walk outside). Also, the last time I walked I got a lot of pain in my side that I didn?t appreciate. I know I should be better and told him I?d try harder. Arg.

Are any of you not exercising and if not, do you feel pressure to from your loved ones? Is it OK to start up again now that I've been out of the game for a month or so?

  • I am in the same position. I haven't been all that great about exercising during this pregnancy and DH has  been on me about it. I know I really should be doing it. As long as you are healthy your heart will be fine for delivery, although the exercise can't hurt. It is also fine to start exercising now as long as your Doctor okays it and you don't overdo it.

  • I haven't exercised in months because of my sciatic nerve pain. I wish I could but it's too painful. I don't get pressured to from DH. He doesn't like to exercise. I think it would be perfectly fine for you to start exercising or starting or daily walks again. Just take it slow and work back up to where you were before. If you feel any pain, you should slow down.
  • We dont exercise to begin with but if he did say something he would have a fat lip!

That being said, he has mentioned that I should be exercising with Vincent when he is born - to get out of the house and go for walks etc. Which I plan to do.

His coworker told me yesterday I should go on a diet (because of of my growing belly) and my husband defended me right away because I havent gained any weight at all with this pregnancy.

Im sure if I had gained weight he probably WOULD say something.

  • well unless you have heart issues then I promise you that your heart will be strong enough for delivery, and if you have heart issues now is probably not the time to start exercising!

My Dr told me from the beginning to keep doing the things I usually do but don't start something new.  If it causes you any pain then back off.  Because your joints are starting to loosen at this point a lot of exercise when you haven't done it in a couple months can be painful.  Your 31 weeks pg I think your allowed some down time.  Strap 25lbs on your dh and tell him to go exercise!

  • I agree with the above posts, don't stress your body out right now.   Talk to your dr about excersizes you could be doing.  Mine gave me a packet of excersizes to do each week of the pregnancy that helps with stretching and cramps etc.  If it becomes painfull I stop.  I have had really bad ligament pains in my pelvic area so I just take things easy.  Aside from the fact that I get out of breath so easily with the lack of lung space left in my chest, haha.

I walk my dogs every day which helps, but I don't do anything more than I did before.

  • You'll be fine.  I wouldn't do anything more than light walking and maybe a little stretching, since you haven't been working out the whole time.  With DD1, I worked out until 24 weeks (just walking and yoga)... then we moved... then I got put on bed rest... I had a very easy delivery.  I've been working out a lot more this time around, but it definitely hasn't made being pregnant any easier.

  • Unfortunately I can't work out and it's driving me CRAZY!  I ran 5x a week before I got pregnant but my doctor won't let me work out at all now because I get such awful braxton hicks.  If it hurts I'd say don't do it.  But if you can get back into walking and it's not painful, I'd say go for it!

  • Haven't been at all. I've been working late, plus I commute about 3-4 hours a day, and when I get home I'm starving and then I pass out.  We at least walked to a pizza place about a 15 minute walk away last night :) We played wii fit games a couple nights ago. I'm not going to beat myself up over it.

  • I think it's definitely okay, and would be healthy, to start exercising again. I rode my bike until ~25 weeks and have recently been walking as much as I possibly can. I notice a lot of BH contrax at the end of the day when I'm walking home from work and my shins hurt a bit when I first get started, but I just power through. My midwife says this is a really good thing - just my uterus muscles getting ready for the birth marathon :). She also mentioned swimming for exercise, but I don't have much interest in getting into a bathing suit in front of a bunch of strangers.

    haha i agree ;)

  • Yes constantly. Not really pressure more of a questioning on when Im gonna go or if he needs me to watch DD so I can go. We were both exercise junkies before and he still is but I just cant bring myself to get motivated anymore.
  • I don't work out other than the occasional dog walk or prenatal yoga class.  I go on kicks where I workout all the time, or not at all, and when I got pregnant it was during a not at all phase, and my low energy in first tri didn't make me change anything.  DH wishes I did more but he isn't working out either these days, so he doesn't hassle me.  I thought I would be more active, but I'm just not.  I do plan on resuming an exercise routine after I get the all clear after LO arrives.  I figure now is not the time to start.
  • That's an interesting motivator from your DH. I have been working out but not as much as before and I don't really feel like my heart is getting much of a workout, honestly. I used to work out to a max HR in the 170s and 180s, sometimes higher, and now that I'm pg I stay below 145 which feels lazy and doesn't seem like it would do much to strengthen your heart. Maybe your DH just has some fears about L&D and needs to talk it out?
  • "Pressure" doesn't work for me, but DH does encourage me to do my prenatal exercises, which I appreciate. I guess your DH's approach is really the key to frustration vs. appreciation.

Walking is great, great, great exercise during pregnancy, as is swimming. I have a separated pelvis so walking is slow-going and causes pain, but I know that it is really good for me so I try to get in at least 10 minutes a day. That certainly is no work-out level of exercise, but it does my body good!
