Parents should not have Facebook (NBR)

I guess it could be baby related if you have children old enough to have a facebook page.  Just saying. I promise I will never hound my child, especially when he's 24 like me, about how he knows so-and-so and use the like button on EVERYTHING they post. My mom does that but won't comment on anything. I hate the like button, it's usable in some circumstances but if you're just going to use it b/c you have nothing to say, don't use it.

My mom is also clicking on everyone's pages that comment on my wall or status asking me how I know people in this state/country. I'm talking to a mom with pPROM in Australia and she's worried she's going to come to my house and kidnap me. ARG!! I put them on a very limited profile and they know it! I had to tell my dad that I was annoyed with getting e-mails (not on FB, but on my Yahoo account) about everything I posted and that it was just a comment. Just because I post that I'm craving coffee doesn't mean she needs to e-mail me or if I say I don't feel good she has to e-mail me asking if I have a temperature or need to lay down. As much as I appreciate it, I'm being smothered. I understand parents are suppose to take care of you, and I'll take care of my son but gimme a break!!

Re: Parents should not have Facebook (NBR)

  • Take them off... or adjust their settings.

I couldn't handle that.  I will never add family like that to my FB.  I figure it's a "social" site, so my family doesn't need to be on it, especially not parents.  I have cousins and stuff but I guess you kind of know your family and you know in advance how they will act, so why not decline the invite and say it's for friends.  Family can contact you other ways.

  • MIL has facebook and it further contributes to her toxic over involvement in our lives. She has 297 friends, but only 5 are actually her friends. The rest are friends of ours or SIL's that she adds. If they have their email address listed she adds them to her distribution lists of different things and most of them are totally dumbfounded when they receive pictures of deer in her front yard. She was livid that I hadn't posted any of our wedding pictures on my page within the week after we got back from our honeymoon and will text me every now and then to talk bad about so and so's profile picture or their status update when she barely knows them. I've contemplated completely deleting mine so I don't have to deal with her.

Agreed. I blocked my BIL because he would only complain about things that I posted and if I ever said a negative thing he always (incorrectly) assumed that it was directed toward him or his wife and kids.  If you have a family member or members who are annoying you that badly just block them or unfriend them.  You can explain to them later why you did it.

Oh geez, I couldn't handle it if it was an IL. Luckily, my MIL gets on to play Frontierville and that's it. She only joined b/c her sister saw my DH post that we found out we were having a boy and called her saying Congrats on him being delivered. All we did was have an anatomy US. Yah, my dad will get upset if I don't post weekly bump pictures. I just e-mailed my mom a very nice, but long e-mail explaining everything and that there have to be limits. I also explained facebook etiquette since they're new. I don't have my BIL or SIL on there because they're toxic too so I'd rather not have them on there. People take the internet way too seriously, I hate that it affects people's relationships THIS much

I e-mailed my mom explaining how I felt. They've done so much for us (i.e. giving me money since I'm in the hospital to pay for bills) that I can't block or unfriend them. Tell your BIL to get that stick out of his butt. If you're going to have issues with him you'd tell him to his face. I had to tell my mom that if I needed coffee or anything I'd let her know

  • I can top all of your stories. My mother DE-FRIENDED me on FB!! Long story short, she is getting married for the 4th time today actually (we weren't invited, b/c we didn't approve), and we do not care for all of the craziness, so we don't go over to her house. Well she had a party at her and bf's house, and we didn't show (and I told her I wasn't coming), she got drunk, she called me drunk (I put her on speaker phone so DH could hear the nasty things she was saying to me), then as I said, Mother you are drunk right now, let's hang the phone up before you say something you can't take back, she screams, "CALL ME WHEN YOU LOVE ME!!!" then hangs up on me, then she de-friended me. LMAO!! Then a few weeks later, she asked me to be friends again. I declined. She then called me this week demanding I be her friend again...umm..I think not so much! Of course there is so much backstory to my mother that this is a mild story Tongue Tied

  • My mom has facebook updates texted directly to her phone. Her usual timing for commenting on things is about 30 seconds.

  • YES!!! So I am not the only one with a crazy Mom!!!

  • well, it sounds a little excessive,

but then again if you are going to post lame stuff like you are craving coffee or that you don't feel good....well lets just say if you were on my list I would block you......

  • One of my neighbors is 15 years old and posted something along the lines of " my bf's wang is the size of a whales".  I guess her friends were asking her about the size and they were giggling about it...

She is friends with her mom, dad, grandpa, uncle, EVERYONE.

We saw that a few hours later her dad responded with the "Don't let me see you post anything like this again... etc..."

I cannot believe she would post something like that up!?! Regardless of who will see it and who won't.

Can you imagine being one of the parents and seeing that?  I wonder how they felt.

  • The "block" function works well. People need to utilize it more, rather than complain about idiots they've accepted on their friends list. Just sayin'. :)

  • I know I wouldn't be able to handle all that. That just sounds like a really bad thing.. I am so sorry..

Yah, you do that to your parents who you usually have a good relationship with and who just gave you 6K to pay your bills while you're in the hospital and tell me how great that goes over. I'll give them credit and hope they'd be smart enough to realize that one minute I'm friends with them and the next minute they can't see my facebook anywhere but my brother is telling them what I'm posting. Yes, I know someone's going to say "Oh, well you shouldn't have added them then." Well, thanks for pointing out how I screwed up, I've already realized that. *twirls finger*
