Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Is it normal for your Beta HCG levels to still be up

HI, I'm new to this site.  I was 8 weeks pregnant when my husband and I went to our first baby check up. The doctor told us that the baby stopped developing at 6 weeks and there was no heartbeat. I had a D&C five days later about mid-August. Is it normal for my beta HCG levels to still be up? Its been three months. I have had two normal cycles since my d&c. Well heavier than normal but the regular 28 days...as usual. This was my first pregnancy and miscarriage...I really dont know what to expect. My doctor isn't really being very helpful but she says its normal. Is this normal?

  • What are your levels?

Although I can't speak from experience, I would say that is not normal for your levels to still be up.

  • i think it was around 20 something.
  • Mine took about 9 weeks to get to zero after a D&C at 9 weeks. Toward the end they went down really slowly but since they were still going down my doctor was ok with it. Do you know how high they were when you miscarried? Maybe your doctor can test again in a week to at least be sure they're coming down. By the way my OB didn't care about betas at all - it was my RE who wanted to track them to zero.

  • I am certainly not an expert or doctor but I would say that no, this is not normal overall although it does take some people longer than others to drop. And not to scare you, but continued elevated hcg can be a sign of other problems (retained tissue, etc.). However, it does depend on how high they were and how quickly they have been going down. If they have really slowed down or plateaued, I would personally get a second opinion. I agree with the pp on getting another test in a week to see if they are dropping. If they continue to go down, then from what I have read, there is less of a concern. They do seem to drop more slowly as they get lower, but it is the three month thing that would worry me. Sorry you are going through this and good luck!
