Trouble TTC

Can we talk about soy?

How many of you are limiting or eliminating soy from your diet?  I have eliminated all obvious sources of soy (soy milk, tofu, etc) for the last year when I made the connection that it was making my already jacked up cycles even more jacked up (and by more jacked up I mean 60+ days long).  I was talking to a friend about it who is now a mom but had TTTC and she said that her acupuncturist gave her herbs that helped with her soy sensitivity.  Just wondering if any of you have had experiences with this or if you had even considered soy being a factor in your TTTC.

Re: Can we talk about soy?

  • Honestly, I was told to avoid any/everything with soy in it, but that's due to my thyroid issues. My thyroid is what's cauing my IF so I really need to avoid anything with soy in it.

  • Good post.  I'm lactose intollerant so there are a few soy products I use.  My medical records indicate I'm LI but my RE has never mentioned it being a potential problem, or reason for my TTTC.  Good thing, because I 'treat' myself 2x a week to a Soy Vanilla Chai from $tarbucks.  That thing is 80% soy milk!

That being said - if they told me that was the cause of my TTTC, I'd drop it like a bad habit.

  • I had been charting before we started TTC and I noticed that my longest cycles were always around the holidays.  I chalked it up to holiday stress at the time, but then it hit me that the holidays are the one time a year when I overindulge in soy - SilkNog to be specific.  I did some googling and realized there was a connection in some people between anovulatory cycles and soy consumption and that's when I cut it out of my diet.  I really miss my silknog this time of year :(

  • Soy acts like estrogen in your body.  I stopped drinking soy milk when my fibroids were removed, since uterine growths are linked to estrogen sometimes.  I don't really like cow's milk but I might look into almond milk.
  • My cycles are typically 28-29 days (now shorter since I started treatment) so I guess this wouldnt apply to me - but it still makes me wonder.

I'm sorry you aren't getting to enjoy your silknog... Part of me wants to go get some (since I've never had it) but since I'm all for being a team player... if you can't have it - I wont have it either.  :o)

Yeah probably not a problem for you then :)  I've never had a 28-29 cycle, but am hoping things will be a little closer to that this month since it's my first medicated cycle.  The soy seemed to extend my already long cycles by around 20 days.

And you are too sweet!!!  But I say don't miss out on the 'nog on my account!!  As a matter of fact just make a toast to me when drinking it, LOL.  It is so yummy - go get you some!!

  • I cut down on soy a few years ago because I have low iron.  My Dr told me soy can slow your body's absorption of iron and to limit soy intake.

Since TTC my acupuncturist told me to avoid soy and also limit dairy (not sure why).  He told me to try almond milk.

  • I used to get soy in all my coffee drinks. Last year I found out that I have cysts in my breasts and that soy is not a good thing to drink due to my cysts. For some reason the Radiloogy techs told me to limit my soy intake. I now have it only im my Chai Tea lattes and I get those like once every 4 months now. I do however have soy beans every now and then.

I'm lactose intolerant, so I got almond milk to try & keep my calcium intake up with my last pregnancy.  It's gross!  The after taste made me gag.  DH just thought it was from the pregnancy, so I made him taste it.  He gagged too.

Have you ever tried rice milk? MH has IBS and can't drink regular milk. He's tried almond and rice, and he likes rice a lot better. I hope you like it! I can't get past the color difference.
