advice for travelling with breastmilk

For those of you who pump or don't nurse in public how do you handle things such as appointments or going out for an errand (if you go out)? I am mostly thinking about when I take DS to his appointments they are usually 40 minutes from home so with travel time and everything he usually needs to eat at some point in the travel.  I am thinking I will just take a bottle of freshly pumped milk with me so I don't have to worry about warming anything there.  Is that safe to do?  I have read online for healthy newborns that milk can sit at room temp 4-6 hours and I am thinking mine would only be out 3-4 hours before he drank it at most.

Also, have you ever been out so long that you needed to pump?  My schedule never seems to match up with when we have appts so I end up not getting in as many pumpings as I would like those days.  Any advice?  I know I should pump before I go but I need to pump when I get up in the morning and then I am leaving in an hour or so and don't have time to pump again.  Are Dr. offices usually pretty good about giving you some place to pump in private?

Thanks so much!! It all makes it so much harder to want to continue pumping and giving breastmilk but I really want to give DS as much of my milk as I can and nursing isn't working the best with his reflux issues.

Also, have you ever been out so long that you needed to pump?  Yes, and I have purchased the car lighter adapter for my pump just for this reason.  I have also used the battery pack at times too.  My schedule never seems to match up with when we have appts so I end up not getting in as many pumpings as I would like those days.  Any advice?  I will pump right before I leave IF time allows me to do so.  I will try to work my schedule around my pumping times as best I can.  I know I should pump before I go but I need to pump when I get up in the morning and then I am leaving in an hour or so and don't have time to pump again.  Are Dr. offices usually pretty good about giving you some place to pump in private?  I have found that most are NOT good about this.  I would call and ask ahead of time if it were me.  See my other comments below.

Regarding the reflux - I had to become an exclusive pumper because of my daughters reflux.  Its very disappointing to not nurse and to be tied to the pump but I'm willing to make that commitment AND knowing that I was going back to work, I knew I'd have to pump, so I was ok with it.  We have to add cereal to the BM we give her along with Prevacid, so I really have no choice but to pump.

I always pack enough bottles for long days away from home.  I will typically pack 1 extra bottle to just be safe.  I transport the bottles in the Medela cooler bag that came with my pump but you can use any cooler bag OR even a lunch bag with an ice pack will work.

Good luck and it does become easier the more often you have to do it.

  • Ditto PP, that I got a car adapter and pumped in the car. We also got a car bottle warmer. The one I bought is by the first years, and did a good job, you had to plan ahead a bit as it took like 10-15min to warm the bottle, but really worked great for us.
